    another solicitation for crew....

It's that time of year again and there are many crews looking for bodies...we're one of them...

capt mark deblasio is planning a trip out of jersey in early may to beat me to the tuna .. and my crew's planning on beating him... lol... '04, '06, and i need '07.... jk... mark, i'm expecting a phone call...

Will be doing many mid-week overnighters may-nov and need reliable crew to pitch in for work and expenses.

over the last 3 seasons we've done 98 trips to the edge and have 1140+ tuna to our credit.

looking to land 50+ swords this season... 70 would be great!!

if you're looking to fish hard and have the flexibility to prove it, shoot me an email at norter79@aol.com .........

You're killing me Stew .. 2005 went to me , 2006 you beat me to it by a day .. I wont let that happen again .. this year we have to be fair .. put the lines in at the same time on the same day and let the fish decide who is going to be NJ's first. Seriously , it never fails to amaze me that people dont jump on this offer to go with a great crew on a great boat. We'll talk ..

I know you boys will be putting up the numbers. If I was a little closer, I'd be on it.

Started the day with three friends cancelling and an iffy forecast.. down to three people.

my dad, joe(name is fictional to protect his identity haha), and myself headed offshore in 4-5 foot east swells and calm winds..

watched the temperature drop to 48.8 degrees about 7 miles inside of the tip of the toms and then watched it rise another 20 degrees over the next 3 miles. during the same 3 miles the wind went from calm to about 15 knots.

slowed to trolling speed when the water hit 62 degrees and set out the spread of 10 lines and 2 teasers.

within a half hour, around 4:45 in 65 fathoms of 64.5 degree water just inshore of the tip, we had a bluefin slam a canyon runner rainbow squid bar on the right long rigger. the first attempt at grabbing the squid failed but the fish came back again and the line came tight. after a short battle we release a bluefin in the 40-50# range.

while bumping the boat in and out of gear during the fight i was marking plenty of fish between 40 and 100 feet down. trolled the area for half an hour or so trying to get another fish to bite. no luck.

while i'm not big on leaving fish to find fish, sometimes i do. sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. given a choice, i'll take the risk if it means i can bring something back for the table. everything about the warmer water on those sat shots screamed yellowfins to me.

so i left the fish and headed out to the tip in search of warmer water. trolled around, on the edge and off, for about an hour before our second shot at fish.

while trolling downsea in 120 fathoms of water about a mile north of the northeast corner, 6 lines get hit in all.(2 rainbow squid spreader bars, 1 ballyhoo skirted with a purple/black cupped canyon runner jet, 1 ballyhoo skirted with a zuchinni cupped canyon runner jet, a blue/white sea witch skirted ballyhoo and a pink skirted ballyhoo). with only 3 of us on board, people had to earn their keep!!..

while clearing lines and teasers, two dropped off. we got the remaining 4 to the boat, by no means were they massive fish but they all taped over 32".

while cleaning the fish we discovered that they were feeding on 3-4" long fish.

    Round 2.

15 minutes later in the same area we had our third shot at fish.

we had put in a couple of blue/silver mamba bars to replace two bars that had baits taken off them in the first rush of yellowfin. both these bars got hit.

the 4 other lines that got hit were a rainbow squid bar, the zuchinni jet/ballhoo combo, purple/black jet/bally combo, and green/yellow skirted ballyhoo.

this time we landed 5 of the 6 fish. three of them in the 30-35# range, the other two around 34"s.

the rest of the trip was uneventful. at night, on the drift, we faced a wind against tide situation. the southwest wind was cranking 20-25 and the water was probably running south around 2 knots.

48 oz of lead did nothing. i don't think our baits got down 30 feet.

decided to run home at first light and hoped the wind was being generated by huge the temperature change. it seemed to have been... could only run 12 knots in the warm water and when we hit the cold water the wind dropped out.

i know the yellowfin weren't huge, but they'll certainly be tasty.

was it worth it for football yellowfin? absolutely. i'd turn right around and go back out.

james, that brings back memories! may 4th and 5th, '06... yea, we were out there on my sister's 30th birthday and then two weeks later on my mom's birthday.. better not let them see this, i don't think they realized..

john, you very well could have been the first to bring them back to cape may.. we're not out of cape may so we don't count for that.. it's the technicalities that make this fun..

may was quite a month last year for sure..

Yeah .. the "Cinco De Mayo" trip .. we went May 5/6 and had much nicer weather. Great fishing and just goes to show you that its all about the water .. I'm gonna have to sneak the boat back into the state of NJ this year, but dont worry Stew, I'll call you and let you know we are going when we put the lines in 100 miles off ..
