ICBA Islamorada Sailfish. Fishing starts Friday...
Those two are the only ones on this events list that get me really nervous. Alex C is one to watch but not sure if he's in. Alex Adler is another. Relentless is also one to watch. Up here in Palm Beach we have a different cast of hot shots. When I get to Miami the hot list is twenty deep... As for the "better than most" attitude ... Its something we better have working on our side. Otherwise being anything less than 100% "can win" attitude will get you crushed like a grape. I don't know anybody who fish's tournaments for a big part of their livlihood who fare well "hoping to do ok". Picking the two best as "targets to beat" is the reality check. Get past them and we should do ok.

Deep,
I like you grew up fishing So. Florida. You are fishing against the best sailfishermen in the world. I was lucky enough to be invited to join Capt. John Louie Dudas on Wound up last year in the Miami Sailfish Tournament. And I can tell you these guys are first class hard core tournaments fishermen. 200 baits a day is the norm. Pumped up baits "NO" fresh baits every 10 minutes "YES" This crew has fished together since they were kids. Louie's father ( John Dudas) along with Bob Lewis invented kite fishing. Louie, Bret Dudas and Roy Huff have been sail fishing since they could walk. That's what they do..... I wish you luck but keep in mind these are not easy tournaments to win no matter how prepared you are. LOL Capt Rick |

Best of the best deep!
They definitely have thier baits under control down there. Be sure to say hello to George Mitchel for me he is 33t Snake Dancer, he is a top shelf guy and a class act! Focus on "your" game and try not to worry about others! Glad to see the boat is working out for you! Wish you the best there! If you have any problems give a yell |

The Dudas family and I go back to the old days. John Sr. I would have to say is possibly the single most skilled guy I have ever had the pleasure butting heads against... I'm well aware of their drill. Rosher and Neber playing it too. A way fresh bait change every few minutes is the ticket. If John Q Public had to buy that much bait it would cost about $2000 a day. Not many can play that game. I can play it with the hoos but not the gogs...
I'm all too familiar how tough these events can be. Hell, I burned out on em and took a couple years off. Tournies that used to be relatively easy to place in just keep getting tougher as new tricks get honed by these guys... Like I said. Islamorada I can hold my own kind of. Palm Beach I can too. Miami theres a list of about 20 that get me quaking in my boots. Never did better than fourth with one single daily win in the years that I fished it... Mary... That boat is comming around really nice. Several "hot spots" for raising fish. She does love it when I jack the throttles. Seems 32.7 knots is her happy place in the rough stuff. I'm shocked how easy she is on the fuel. We did the 75 from haulover to Islamorada and fished three very full days on 114 gallons...

Its a lot more than change the bait out every few minutes, been there done that. I have caught bait for them with thier supplier and know the in's and outs of how they do it and what they feed them its pretty wild. Right place right time excellent game, great bait and always the same top notch crew, excellent gear, the whole nine its there. They are most importantly confident and prepared. I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground about sailfishing but I do pay attention they kick butt and take names. I hear names Miss Britt Get Lit Relentless Contender One Wound Up and many more that I am missing and I would be shaking too Consistency is the key worry about whats going on it your world! |

That boat has something in common with that 27 rocket I run up north. They love to be run like you hate em. The 27 is happiest close to 41 kts. The 31 with same power is happy at 32.7 with same engines. The thing that I can't for the life of me figure out is how come those 250 four stokes burn almost the same at 4700 on the 31 or 4900 on the 27 as they do at 4200. 24.3 at 4200 and 24.8 at the higher. Way more efficient at the higher rpms for sure... Fast I'll bring all I got... Just hoping for a touch of luck... ![]()
