Aluminum or Slick Butts for 30 & 50s?

Trying to decide on some new rods and curious what you prefer for 30 & 50 Internationals on stand-up rods?

Slick-butt or aluminum?? Leaning towards aluminum but many of the rods seem to come with the slick-butt style hard plastic. Is the slick butt style stong enough to stand up?

    What's the preference?

I don't like the slick butts. They wear out over time--the grooves in the gimble open up & the rods "wabble" in the rod holder.

If you have the same problem with the aluminum (& u will eventually), u can replace them if you get 2 piece rods.

I might be wrong, but I think you can get an aluminum gimble and put it on the slick butt....

its more of a personal prefrence thing..i like alum for 50 size reels..or if you are using heavy 30's.. although we did a few slickbutts for the standup giant tuna this year using 70 and 80 reels....what reels are you using?

See how long those slick butts last when you crank on fish with them in the rod holder. Anything bigger than a tyrnos or tld 25 go AL.

yeah, you really want to use slick butt while holding, would not recomend fighting BIG drags from the holder to often

The only thing without aluminum I use is for dink rods or a pitch rod for whitey.
