Hey Ahi ..

I wasn't there for a long time at all, only 13 days, and did nothing exciting... All three boats I fished on caught blue marlin to about 750 but I managed not to be on board for all these occasions, jumping off every one we did hook...

Generally speaking blue marlin were raised/hooked/caught by the fleet almost every day when I was there, including two fish at or near the grander class, but not in the numbers of June and the first half of July. The full moon copped a lot of blame for the drop in fishing, but there was a decent bite over the last full moon so I think just as the season started early, the normal slowdown in August may have started a little early too. Conditions did look good, lots of bait around, including in the last few days lots of little pompano dorado (bright-blue marlin candies), great water colour and lots of ocean life (spotted dolphin, finback whales, shearwaters). There were some white marlin around (we had 5-7 shots) where there had been very few the whole season long, and some guys will tell you that when whites are around it means the blues won't be as common as blue marlin do occasionally snack on their smaller cousins. Some bigeye tuna to 90kg (around 200#) were caught in the early part of my visit, but not many.

Stewart's team were very successful at raising fish, and they were based in a good location (Calheta, further to the west) so most of the time they could work the western grounds all by themselves while the fleet normally worked the area off Funchal and Cabo Girao... They raised a lot of fish, just before I arrived they had raised 11 in 13 days which is hot hot hot...

Not too many are using Roddy's hooks, I never got a bite on mine. But this year I noticed the Owner jobus which are pretty much the same shape on quite a few boats, single, and two hook rigs. Most folks that used them seemed happy with them, they hold their points better than I thought even when the black coating starts to flake off, don't seem to need resharpening and even the 10/0 size is very strong. Look out for electrolysis/corrosion between the hook and the cable though. Best to insulate the cable with a piece of nylon tubing, and if you're using a two hook rig, a wrap of tape along the cable where it lies along the shank of the front hook. To be honest, I don't think that in our fishery (big fish/big mouths and near 100% release) they offer such a huge advantage over properly sharpened standard hooks in bigger sizes but I would now prefer them when rigging smaller lures like 10" as you're likely to get whitey bites on those and you can't have a hook too sticky for Mr. Whitey.

Hot lures... well the impression I got was that get it running nicely behind your boat and it's got a good chance of getting a bite - old favourites like tubes and super plungers were working well, in the good old colours like black, purple, blue... You didn't need a big lure to get a bite, but heavy leader was a real advantage (>600).

Lures that we personally had good luck on included

- Aloha lures smash bait, my new short corner darling. Basically it's a monster tube which pushes a lot of water but stays put surprisingly well. I don't like to run all big baits like this but do like to run one big lure up short as a lot of bigger fish seem to come to a bigger lure. On the BALANCAL, the boat I spent most of my time on, this one (black head w/shell chips, metallic blue vinyl skirt over orange and yellow newell inner skirts) raised a blue about 750 that gave it a couple shots, pulled line and came off. Captain Anibal went round and raised the fish again which then came to a ...

- Bomboy Llanes "Kaya" .. medium-sized straight runner with a slightly tapered nose, running on the long rigger. Gave 5-6 shots at this lure before finally hooking up, dumping half the spool on a Penn 130 at 35lb of strike drag and pulling the hook (Aargh!). The hooks were only about 10/0 or maybe even 9/0 Jobus and we should have backed off the drag. Great all round size and lovely rigger bait, long rigger, or short rigger when it's calm. Only problem is, it's v. expensive! The one on board the BALANCAL was a green tinted head with a silver insert and red eyes skirted with metallic green vinyl and lime green moldcraft inner skirts. We've got a lot of mackerel on our bait grounds so this thing looked a reasonable match.

- Tinker clone of Murray Bros LNG #2 - Client's lure, first time out, running in the stinger position, HARD knockdown, comes tight and a 500lb blue explodes towards the boat in a spectacular greyhounding jump, shook the hook! Bummer, bummer, triple bummer. Another great all round size, ran really well on the long rigger. Nearly as much commotion as a tube in calm water, but handles rougher conditions.

- Marlin magic large tube, just seems to be a consistent producing lure. Anibal caught a 700 on one of mine (green tinted top, silver reflective insert, mirror eyes head with blue vinyl over orange and pink newell inner skirts) the day after missing the slightly bigger fish. Arguably still my favourite for calm conditions on the long rigger and swims really nicely on the long flatline too. Wake waves are more pronounced near the transom so you can tune it to keep working there even in less than ideal conditions. CABO SAO JOAO lost a big fish in the near grander class on a similar marlin magic bait, shorter head, larger diameter/blunter nose. I think that one is called a large Henry?

- I think I'll be bringing over some 10" bullets/jets next time. Good bait for bigeye, marlin of both denominations will eat them too, I'll run it on the stinger bait off the center rigger on a long leader of 300 lb fluoro. I rigged the one we used with a 60 degree rig of 8/0 or 9/0 swordfish hooks (extra heavy shank, needed a lot of work to knock the point in shape). I was quite impressed how they managed to snag even persnitcky little dorados but unfortunately they missed the white marlin we raised to this lure. I'm gonna try Jobus next time.

I might be going back in late Aug/early Sept.

Aloha!
I have a smash bait but kinda liked the look / size of the explossion from the soft BBL tube. The winds just died so now I can run some calmer water lures & some of the same models but with no lead

It seems when Hawaiian lure makers take a vacation to Florida and fish a tournament in the Bahamas their prices sky rocket. I could side by side compair when I was in Hawaii last spring..The quallity of the incert allso goes down hill for some makers..Too Bad..

You'll get yers in the late summer...Nice ta have ya back...Stay safe.

If anyone offers a chance ta troll bigeye at night, next time I'm in. Last trip to Cairnes we had handlines busted each night we passed the long liners. 10 knots at night, amazing. Sounds crazy but true.

I've been getting some good reports on those Korean hooks.....I've used the 10/0-12/0s and sent some out to fishermen....both used them for single stiffies and doubles....very strong...ain't no fish st8ing them out....no complaints

I always have problems hooking the whites....Can't figure out why.....doesn't matter cause I want Mr. Blue anyways.......The lure that I see in the Bahamas that consistantly catches the Whites are the Iland Lures Black Hole....not to sure why...could it be the hair?

Hey Sounds like a great trip. I agree with what you had to say about the jet heads, though I am partial to them since we make them. Most people dont believe in them or have the faith in them. We were just written up in the latest issue of Marlin Magazine in which the editor explains the same thing. We custom make our own resin head lures as well but we dont sell them, or at least not yet.

The feedback on our jets has been everything from 70+ kings, wahoo, tuna of all sorts and marlin.

We carry the Korean hooks as well, I am impressed with these hooks. We run a common hookset of 400-800lb cable with a lead mustad 7732 followed by a 7691S on the back, I think the mistake some people make is not using any shrink tube or the wrong kind to eliminate electrolysis/corrosion and I agree on a few wraps to get the hookset to lay right along the lure. On our single hooksets we use a single 7691S with cable etc.

We go up the 12/0's and have also started mixing in some of the Koreans.

Just my thoughts.
