hey everyone im heading to acapulco, mexico in four weeks and im definitely trying to get in some offshore fishing. anyone know about sails/tuna in the acapulco area this time of year? how about charters? any help would be appreciated!
I used to fish Acapulco for many years from 1980-88. Went every year for 7 or 8 yrs. We would go the week after xmas and the day right after thanksgiving. Best trips of my life. We used to catch 10-15 sails per day and some of the largest mahi I ever seen. Their peak billfish season is Dec, Jan, Feb and March I believe. Caught a huge blue marlin on my last trip that I had to demand it be released. I dont know if they still have a fasination of killing billfish but hopfully they are over it. Just tell the captain and mates you want to release. Their are a few locals who own center consoles that may treat you well and take you out. I used to pay $150 for a 6 hr trip. But its been a while for me so I cant give you any reference to who to fish with. Its a great place and the nite life is second to none. Enjoy yourself and take antibiotics for 3 or 4 days before you go and you will be fine. Tell your doctor your going there and he will prescribe some anti-b's for you. The bacteria is in everything downthere unless you drank bottled water for a week. Lobsters were cheap and very good. The timeshare hounds will hit you right off the plane so dont get distracted. John Wayne owned a huge home up on the cliffs overlooking Acapulco Bay. Very nice. There a re a few racquet clubs on the hill that are great for lunch, Las Brisas was a great place to stay. Good luck and your going to have a blast. Bring us back a bunch of pics. I miss it! Later Capt Larry
thanks for the info! should i book a charter in advance or do you think walking the docks when i get there will find me a boat to ride on? i do a lot of fishing off ocean city and plan on bringing a bunch of my stuff that i want to try for sailfish...hopefully i can find a captain who won't mind letting me do a lot of the mate duties...i like to fish when im out there, not watch other people fish for me!
