A note to update our goals and activities:
The 7th Annual Big Game Room (BGR) at the Miami Intl. Boat Show was a success… thousands of visitors came through and if you missed it we hope you’ll plan to attend next year. The BGR always starts the Thursday before the President’s Day Monday holiday. It was a little disappointing that we were unable to get the “Shallow Water Room” going this year but hopefully the folks in that segment of the sport will make it happen next year. The NMMA staff did a great job producing the show and some of the vendors reported it to be their best ever show! Our ABMT booth was very active, many fishing friends came by to see us and lots of new contacts were made. We are expecting a busy 2010 fishing season!
The latest edition of our tournament magazine ON THE EDGE is now online. OTE Volume #4 can be viewed at www.abmt.vi/pages/otedirective.htm. Due to its popularity, we upped the printing this year by 5000 additional copies. Many thanks to our advertisers and sponsors for their support and we feel our readers will be pleased with the new articles and photos. We produce OTE once a year and anyone wanting a personal subscription can sign up at www.abmt.vi/pages/merchandise.htm. The magazine is now being delivered to tackle stores and marinas from Jacksonville to Miami, the Florida and Alabama Gulf Coast, Bermuda, Bahamas, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands. We thank volunteers Chris Whitley and Bob Rapuk for their distribution effort.
We formally announced the ambitious goal of creating the ‘World Series of Big Game Fishing’ (WSBGF) at a gathering of fishing associates during the recent Miami Intl. Boat Show. We feel the time has come for the sport to enjoy a grand “fish off” once each year. In order to hold a global competition there must be a solid foundation built first - one with standardized release and angling rules and an established observer program - and finally a minimum of 4 regions that include at least twelve (12) fishing tournaments to serve as qualifying events. Over the past six years we’ve developed two (2) of these regional competitions in six countries known as the ’Bermuda Triangle Series’ and ‘Spanish Main Series.’ The ground work for the next series has started and planned in 2011 is the ‘Pacific Rim Series’ with three legs spread out along the coast of Central America.
Finally in 2012… we’ll kick off the 4th regional series named the ‘Southern Cross Series’ with three more legs spanning across the Pacific - the last leg being held on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. After a winner of the ‘Southern Cross Series’ is declared… in will fly the finalist of the other 3 regions to participate in the first World Series of Big Game Fishing!
We realize we are biting off quite a bit and we will need the help of others to accomplish these goals. We have established a “startup committee” to enlist the guidance of industry experts. Already it’s been brought up that fishermen around the world will be asking that their destination be included as either a qualifying event or as the setting of the grand finale. We promise other fishing venues will be included in the future – please have patience because for now we are focused on getting the first World Series of the sport off the ground!
Want to help out?
What we need most is your continued support of the two regional series (SMS and BTS) already established in the Atlantic and Caribbean. We must keep the balls in the air so to speak, so that next year, in 2011, we can get the Pacific Rim Series (Guatemala, Mexico and a third Central America destination) going.
In 2012 the ‘Southern Cross Series’ (Galapagos, Hawaii and Australia) will be established. Finally, in the same calendar year, with tournaments in 12 destinations, we'll have 4 regions of the world competing for a chance to fish in the finals.
In mid-November of the same year (2012) the 4 regional winners will converge on the Great Barrier Reef and the fur will fly! Four teams will rotate 4 boats over a four day period (fish 3 days straight, take a day off and fish the last day) and the first World Series Champions in the sport will be declared!
We invite everyone to join in to help make this happen!
Profits from this effort will benefit the VI Council Boy Scouts of America and youth programs around the world. Keep up with the progress at http://www.abmt.vi/ We can be reached toll free at 1-888-234-7484 or (340) 775-9500. Our cell is (340) 626-3139. Fax 340-779-8605.
