    7/24-25 Spencer/Lindy and 7/26-27 Dip-Fishtails

    7/24-25

Headed to the spencer on tuesday and picked two yellowfin off the northeast side of the canyon in the afternoon. one fish hit a canyon runner 9" rainbow squid bar and the other hit a ballyhoo skirted with a black/purple jet.

about an hour before dark we had a mako explode 10 feet out of the water on a purple/black islander over a horse ballyhoo pulled from the flat line. broke the fish off after about a minute but it was a cool sight nonetheless.

set up right on top of that spot to shark and did nothing all night.

trolled up to the lindy in the morning and missed a white marlin on the southwest wall around 8:45am in 100 fathoms.

went 2 for 3 on yellowfin at the tip around 9am. two fish hit green machine spreader bars and one fish hit a cupped purple/black canyon runner jet over a ballyhoo.

spent about two hours running from pot to pot with the spearguns and shot 15 dolphin.

    7/26-27

Left the dock at midnight to get the first light troll bite on thursday morning at the dip. it did little good as our first bites didn't come until 10:30am in between the middle grounds and fishtails. two yellowfin came up on a green machine bar and purple/black jet over ballyhoo while trolling around dolphins...

continued to work fishtails as we had reports of great fishing there the day before but couldn't raise anything.

worked our way back to the west and finally had a few more shots..

my dad baited and released a white in the middle grounds.. it came up on a purple/black canyon runner jet over a medium ballyhoo... the release took a bit of time because we were trolling 12 lines, a teaser bar from each rigger and bowling pin chains from each corner .. as boredom escalates in the cockpit the complexity of the trolling spread(often to our disadvantage) usually does as well...

at dusk we found a pod of feeding dolphins about 6 miles east of the dip, trolled through them and had two yellowfin come up. one came up on a canyon runner 9" rainbow squid bar and one on a green machine bar, but only one came tight.

the night chunk was slow but we had several bites. boated one yellowfin and broke two off boatside. both fish were broken off when someone was alone in the cockpit and couldn't wake someone up to gaff it.. i foolishly put the rod in the holder, took a wrap on 50 pound flouro to protect the rod and tried to get the gaff out and gaff the fish...it didn't work and the yellowfin swam away laughing at me...

How was the spearfishing out there? The visibility must have been unreal in that blue water.

joe, we did meet down there. we're not doing it this year.

at our farthest point away it was 132nm. ran to the dip, trolled to the tails and ran home from the dip...fuel burn was 325 gallons.

shoefish, surprisingly the visibility wasn't that great..couldn't see the pot lines 30 feet away.. last year there were times when it was well over 100 feet.

need to catch up on some sleep...
