7-21 half day- INVASION OF THE COBES!

Today we had an afternoon half day with Steve Ryan, Tara, and Tara's coonass family from Louisiana. Slick fart flat 80 degree gin clear water. We started off on the south side of the jetty catching loads of spots on bloodworms. In a half hour, we caught more than enough to use for the day and fill my baitpen. The bait was the easiest to catch I have seen all year. Next spot we headed was the dumpsite. We saw some tiny 10# cobes there but didnt even make a cast on them. Then we went over to the buoy line. First stop was #7. 300 yards off the buoy we saw a huge black mass on the water free swimming well off the buoy but headed right towards it. Im thinking this is gonna be one of those schools of finning bull redfish that have been around lately, but nope. This was a PILE of cobias. Most were to small to be legal, but none the less there were probably 20 or so fish there. Scott drops a spot in and instantly hooks up. Nice 50# fish breaks the 44# piano wire king rig at the back of the boat. Then I throw the jig from up top. This was the awesome part. Every single one of the fish in the group turns on the jig. I pull it away from all of them and had the whole school on the side of the boat at free gaffing distance while I am just bouncing the jig from up one the bridge and the fish are just balled all around it stabbing at it. We jigged a few and threw some back, but the one I ended putting on the jig was the biggest one left in the school, a 45# class fish. Now I am having fun. I love catching cobia and I have been on the water for a grand total of 45 minutes including catching bait and seen thirty or so cobes. After we see all these cobes and gaff one and throw it in the box, the women on the boat flip out. They tell me it was too bloody and the fish were too big and that they want to go back to the inlet and catch spot!!!!ARE YOU KIDDING ME? nope. They arent kidding. I have heard some strange ones on fishing trips but thats the first time I have ever heard that the fishing was too good, the fish were too big and too bloody, and they would rather catch spot. Not what I would have done, but I aint the one paying the bill. So now I am just gonna in passing check the buoys on the way home. First buoy back was a dump site buoy. You guessed it. There is 10 or so on this one now -all rat 10# fish, but what the hell. I make one cast and get some nasty looks from down below. I pick up and leave them there. Next buoy in line was the RI buoy.... Only two on this one a 40#er and a 60#er. I tried for ten minutes to get them to bite but they didnt want anything. I had to tell the women on the boat if they dont want to catch fish, maybe they should have rented a jet ski instead of a charter fishing boat. The men on the boat finally got my back and talked the women into bottom fishing for sharks instead of spot and we caught 44'' blacktips every ten minutes for the rest of the trip. Best cobia fishing I have seen all year and I wasnt even allowed to fish for them. They were all happy about catching the sharks and could have cared less about the cobes. Strange people but they had a great time and I was more than delighted to have a charter for the day.

We have plenty of dates available. My half day rate is only $550. Check www.matadorcharters.com for more info.
