7/20/09 Canyon Report 1st White of 09

We left the dock at 2:30 am with a plan to try for bluefin before venturing out to the deep. Trolled around the bluefin grounds from first light until 9:30 am,with no bluefin just one gaffer mahi, we decided to make the run to the deep. We arrived at the wilmington and quickly caught a skip jack. After a couple more hours the bridge poll went off of course my father was in the head. When my friend went to let it down, but accidently put the lever drag too far down and birdsnested the reel, oh well shit happens. As I am sitting by the right flat pissed about losing a nice fish. I see the rod bend and hear my friend big Frank yell white, before he could even finish the word I had the rod and was droppin back. I hooked the fish and faught it for the first White release of 09, also a tourney size one. After that we had no more action besides seeing, what I believe to be a nice blue marlin on the surface and then free jumping.
