The 692 is a "tween" motor... I have mixed feelings on them. The 671 is a winner... Tough, good on fuel, very servicable... The 892 series are also work horses... I worked on a boat not long back with the 692 mills in her and the history of that set was a troubled one. Yes its detroit so yes it can be fixed reasonably easy but the number of issues those negines had was far worse than the other two series I mentioned.
If I had my ruthers I would look for the 671 ti series prefereably done by JT or perhaps covington. The fuel burn is less and the reliability better. You may drop a bit more oil and perhps a touch smokier but at least to me a more reliable comfortable set to own...
The 892 motors are going to be more horse than you are probably looking for but they too are tough. They do burn fuel though too as a negative point.
Of the entire 6 series the 71's were designed a very long time ago to blend well. the 8 series the 92 was built to that configuration. The 6 and 92 just never really meshed well enough for my tates...

YEA DEEP MY MISTAKE. THE ONES WE HAVE LOOKED AT HAVE THE 485HP 6-71TIB. SO YOU THINK THERE GOOD ENGINES IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE 44OCEAN W/ THOSE ENGINES BURNS? THANKS FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE BY THE WAY. I APPRECIATE IT.

I had a few sets in different boats. I only ran two oceans in my life the one was a 48 with 871 and the ither was a 55 with 892... So the numbers wouldn't apply there... I was much more fond of the Post boats and wound up not only running but owning a couple. My 42 had the 450 hp conversion and she was about 34-36 at 23 knots. The 46 I had was 490 conversion and she was a fast boat. 37.5 gph at 27 knots...
I had 470 coversion in a Hatteras 42 and she was 22.5 knots also at 37 gph... A bertram 42 I ran had the 470 package and was almost exactlt the same burn as the Hatteras...
Getting back to the posts. I see a lot of them with the lower horse versions of the6-71... To make that boat go the way she should you need at least the 450 packages.
Keep them under 2250 rpm and they will last. Up at 2300-2400 issues crept up pretty fast...

look to burn about a mile to the gal. at 2200 rpm the local detroit dealer says replacement parts for 71 and 92 series are getting very hard to find. he says they will guarantee the labor but not the parts.

At 2050 on the 46 I would get near 24kts and burn about 28gph (for the pair)... That was my most efficient speed for that boat...

I agree with Deep on the 671 over the 92 series. But I think in this area Cummins has a much better fuel efficient power plant. Thats just my opinion. I know a friend that just repowered his 48 Ocean that had 671 ti's to the new cummins at 630 hp which is lighter more fuel efficient and gave him about 5 more kts at cruise...... I've owned the 671 tis and although a great engine it was always leaking oil. I've run boats with 892s and they were nothing but trouble.I think when buying a boat your engines are the one of the most important factors. Hope this helps!

Run away from any 692 engine. They are a POS and have no longevity.

I don't have much time with these engines but what I can tell you is that it's around $12,000 per side to have them rebuilt.
