The $58,000 raised at this tournament will fund future scholarships for students in Dare County. Last year's tournament contributed to nine scholarships for Dare County graduating seniors and a donation to the College of the Albemarle given by the Foundation in 2009.
Unlike previous years, the Carolina Custom Shootout was open to ANY custom sportfish boat built in the states of North and/or South Carolina. The tournament is release only and, in addition to basic entry, includes two Calcutta categories and a game fish category.
This tournament is heavily supported by the participation of sponsors, local businesses and partners within the marine industry. In fact, all of the food featured at each night's reception was donated by local restaurants – Thursday night's reception was catered by The Dunes in Nags Head, Stripers Bar and Grille in Manteo, and Hurricane Mo's Manteo/Kitty Hawk. Friday night's reception was catered by Sam & Omie's in Nags Head, Darrell's in Manteo and Awful Arthurs in Kill Devil Hills. Saturday night's reception was Lone Cedar Café in Nags Head, 1587 in Manteo, and Sugar Creek in Nags Head. Sunday night's award ceremony was catered by Ortegaz Southwestern Grill and Wine Bar in Manteo, Owen's in Nags Head and Kelly's Outer Banks Restaurant in Nags Head.
The Foundation would like to extend heartfelt thanks all volunteers, sponsors and participants who make this fundraiser possible. With this support, efforts will continue to make each tournament better and more successful than the last.
The mission of the Dare County Boat Builders Foundation is to develop, encourage and promote public awareness of the historical and cultural heritage of boat building in Dare County and to support educational opportunities for students.
