6-24/6-25 Washington on FIRE (50+ YFT and 3 for 4 on Mako to 68")...Late Report
With the weather looking nice, I ventured down to Sunset Marina in West Ocean City (Md.) to fish with my two roommates from college as well as a few other characters on a fun trip. We had a complete allstar crew on board and knew we were in for a good one.
We made our way out to the Washington on J-Rob's pops' 45 Viking in flat seas and were immediately greeted with action, and TONS of it. We went through 6 packs of Hoo throughout the day and easily caught 50+ plus YFT (probably well over 60). They were chewin' on everything and anything. We had two Mako bites on the troll popping one off about 50 feet from the boat and killing the other, a fat 68". That was a first for me, getting two Mako bites on the troll in one day, and put everyone in great spirits thinking about what was to come on the drift at night despite already killing our 1 fish. We had lots of bites on standard issue spreaderbars pulled by most crews, and skirted ballyhoo. They seemed to prefer green skirts, but when the bite is that hot, it's hard to give an an accurate report on what baits to pull. We also managed a loner 10 pound Mahi. Although the fish were mostly throwbacks, who the hell cares when the bite is that en fuego!?! We did pull the hook on a two 35-40 pounders, but every other fish was in the 25-35 inch range with most being just a hair too small to keep.
As we got tired of punishing the Jellybean YFT, we pushed off to the deep out around the 461 lump in search of Eye Balls. Although the surface looked awfully good with rips and slicks on top everywhere, all the life that we had inshore on the 100 line and surrounding areas was no where to be found. Having played the Big Eye game before, we decided to stick it out and hope for the best. It was not to be, so we pushed back inshore to the West wall of the Washington to catch a few more YFT before setting up for the night.
We set up in 900 feet of water on the west wall and that's where we would stay for the night seeing that there was hardly a drift. To make a long story short, we ended up releasing two more Mako (one that was a solid 140+ and one that looked to be a tad over 110). We had Blue dogs around all night, but to put it bluntly, that water is super sharky with lots of Mako around.
By the way, I will be posting some killer shots and a video or two if someone on here can assist with posting that. Like I said, I am back at it for the next few days with day trolls, but they will come shortly after that. I have over 30 minutes of video including blowing the eyes out of a Mako and well over 100 shots from this trip alone. I'll sort through them ASAP and try to get them up but in the meantime, I wanted to give you Southerners a headsup on the bite that was goin off a few days ago when I had a quick minute
I am going to throw some Mako kabobs on the barbie now and then head up to the boat. I'm back at it again tomorrow and possibly the following day. With the way the bite is now, IT'S TIME TO GO!!!
Anyone thinking about getting in on a super hot troll bite, I'd highly recommend putting a crew together. We do have some dates available on the Pez Machine and would love to get you out there.
Good luck to anyone that makes the run, catch em up and stay safe. Cya in the blue H2o.
I uploaded a video of the Mako we caught on the troll, but there is some pretty harsh "boat talk" that I would like to have removed...I apologize for the foul language. Anyone that can help, please shoot me a private message in regards to clipping the foul language out with bleeps...
Thanks so much...I'll try to get some pictures up too at some point
