3 skunks... then some redemption

After getting blanked in the Hudson on the 12th, I figured I would take my buddies offer to fish with him in the Keys for a few days.

I arrived at his crib thursday night at 1:30 am to find them still filleting the days catch. Just what the doctor ordered

Late start friday due to an engine issue, left the dock at 4pm . Put out a nice spread in 600 feet and dragged it all the way to 1800 without a sniff. 89 degree water, plenty of bait and weedlines but no takers.

Set up for swords as the sun was going down, drifted till midnight. Skunk #2

Set out saturday am for the troll, same as friday. Skunk #3

With it forecast to blow harder on sunday, we headed to Key Weird to drown our sorrows. Saw the sun go down then come up again before we had enough. Only kicked out of 2 bars

Some late sleeping on sunday, but we managed to shake off the queeze by nightfall and headed to the reef in a 3' chop. Immediately innundated with yellowtail, which were replaced by nice sized mangroves after sunset. Kept about 20 and released at least 30 more in about 2 hours, plus the assorted cudas, morays and grunts. Had one nice red snapper chopped in half

Monday had a few hours to kill before my flight, so we headed back to the reef. Snorkled with some tarpon that were as big as I was, and a 5' cuda that seemed intent on humping my leg. Moved out to 80 feet and threw out the chumbag. Picked a few small grouper and kingfish, and lost what was probably a nicer grouper when I couldn't get him more than 5' off the bottom. Lesson learned - change your leader every 10 fish

Barely made my plane in FLL, good to be back and thinking about the canyons again

Sorry no pics, the camera never left the bag

Certainly sounds like one Doug! The "go down fish".
Glad you had some tropical pullage and playtime.
I know your canyon bloodfest is bound to happen soon this year and hope that you will, once again, record it all for us.
Cheers,
SeaBiscuit
