Monday, August 17 ~ Fishing Day One Press Release

After tabulating all the entries and adding up the calcutta figures, the 2009 Mid-Atlantic $500,000 field is set at 136 boats with a total cash purse of $1,761,602! Tournament week got off to a great start as the weatherman delivered a perfect day and 127 boats headed offshore on Day One. The scales were busy shortly after the 5 p.m. opening as several qualifying fish were weighed during this evening's weigh-in session at both Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May, New Jersey and Sunset Marina in Ocean City, Maryland and a lot of familiar names can be found on the leaderboard.

Captain Danny Scotti at the wheel of Gina Addeo's Gina Lisa based in Staten Island, New York took the lead in the white marlin category with a 75 pounder. Steve Castellini of Ocean City, New Jersey aboard his Uncle T is in second place with a 74 pounder. There’s a tie for third place between Greg Murphy’s Sun Runner out of Long Beach, New Jersey and John Raimondo’s Sea Mistress from Newton Square, Pennsylvania as each weighed white marlin of 71 pounds.

In the blue marlin division Staten Island, New York's Sonny Falcone aboard his Cookie II jumped to an early lead after weighing a 453 pounder. Second and third place in the category are vacant.

Charlie Duerr of Tinton Falls, New Jersey aboard his Sea Hag leads the tuna category with a 69-pound yellowfin. There's a tie for second place between Cape May, New Jersey's own Bob Belansen and Peter Cherasia of Rumson, New Jersey on Shark Byte as both weighed 67-pound yellowfins today.

Palm Beach, Florida's Dan Borislow aboard his Triple Crown leads the dolphin (mahi-mahi) category with a 34 pounder. The wahoo category is lead by Albert Stork of Forked River, New Jersey with a 66-pound 'hoo on Southern Comfort.

The billfish bite was red hot and numerous boats racked up multiple releases. Some of the boats with significant billfish releases on Day One include Joe Recupero of Mullica Hill, New Jersey with seven white marlin releases aboard his Genavive and Malvern, Pennsylvania's Walt Kuhn released five white marlin on Contagno. Woodbury, New Jersey's James Wright aboard Cap'n Crunch let go four white marlin while Sea Mistress also had four white marlin releases in addition to their 71-pounder. Pat Healy's Viking 68 based in New Gretna, New Jersey released three white marlin today. Boats releasing a blue marlin today include Gerard Petrie of Staten Island, New York on his Change Order and Lori Muscara of Brigantine, New Jersey on her Lori A.
