    20 # Class standup Gear ?

My offshore is really near shore. I fish 20 to 30 miles off of NYC.

I wanted to upgrade some of my outfits for trolling but dont want to over do it.

I have 30 lbs gear but plan to purchase some tld 15's and/or tld 20's or an okuma gold 20
and put them on penn mariner standup 12 30 class rods

The target species are usually football bluefin, skipjack, big bluefish and mid sized mahi. I am pretty confident that the set up will be more than I really need. Of course I have dreams of some bigger bluefin coming to visit!

I have been guessing that this would be popular gear for sailfish.

What do you use your 20 lbs trolling gear for?

TLD 20's or Shimano speedmasters Both are great reels and can handle what your targeting.

Canvas drags scare me for the chance of a big tuna.

So whats the bigest fish you would target on 20 # class gear?

I have landed bluefin, and midsized (20lbs) mahi on a penn 975. Not to mention the bluefish and striped bass that I mostly fish for?

What is this class good for in the near shore zone? 30, 40 lb tuna? small sharks?

    I have spooled up a tld 15 with probably 500 yards of 65 # braid and a 30 yard topshot of 30 # mono.

i like a good sporty fight with the fish where they can give a good accounting of themselves....light tackle.

this summer I had a great battle with a 65-70 # class white marlin on a tld 25 and I was impressed with how the reel handled the fish.

For the money the AVETs are a great choice -

If you buy the Okumas, you might as well take pictures when you pull them out of the box so you can save a little time when you post them on EBAY.

    TLD 20II

The "new" Shimano TLD 20II (2-speed) Reels are very nice for the price...

If you can afford it the Penn 16 VSX is a kick-ass reel and will handle all but a possible big Bluefin you may run across where you are fishing..
