12 year old land heaviest Fla. Bull Shark record

    http://apnews.excite.com/article/200...D8TU4KDG0.html

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A 12-year-old Connecticut boy may be the new Florida state record holder for catching the heaviest bull shark. Aidan Murray Medley had a spent a half day at sea Tuesday when he reeled in the 551-pound bull shark just north of the Palm Beach Inlet.

The seventh-grader at Eagle Hill School in Greenwich was in Palm Beach County on vacation with his family. They plan to submit his catch for a new state record.

Florida wildlife officials say the current record set in 1981 was a 517-pound catch at Panama City Beach.

Wow, good stuff. I didnt realize the state record was so light on Bull Sharks. I have seen a few that were larger than that (based on my guestimates). We have a spot on the end of the Island I am on that has big bulls (9-10 footers) caught out of it continually by one of the local captains while he is tarpon fishing.

no one really keeps bull sharks

The records not that big because most people dont kill a shark that you cant eat. I am happy a little kid caught a fish like that but lets be realistic you mean to tell me he set the hook, took the rod to the chair sat in the chair strapped himself into the rod and fought the fish by himself come on now its not a true record if he had help just my two sense. I also read somewhere he landed the fish in twenty minutes.

I wouldn't doubt him so fast there are alot of heavily trained kids that could fish hardcore. Anngler from this board is amazing. My 12 year old son fishes stand up to sharks, marlin, swords and tuna pushing 400 and does it by IGFA regulations. We use circles and letting the shark hook itself. The hardest part for him is getting the rod/reel once hooked out of the holder and in the harness LOL

Those damn bullsharks care the chit out of me, one bad shark

I agree - especially on a shark. Sharks are one of the big fish species that records are attainable by jr's.

I say good for the kid. But.... The local tv media splash on it has all the bunny boinkers up in arms calling for no more shark fishing. Bulls get bigger ut as noted above almost nobody kills them, unless is a crew hungry for the mount comission. Still let the kid have his moment of glory...

Thank God someone else feels the way I do about the jr. angler. Having been born and raised in NJ until I was old and smart enough to get out of that state, I can see the skepticism(sp) of madgaffer.

We have run alot of charters here in NC for sharks and push for the charter to get involved in EVERY aspect except for the wiring and gaffing or release.

The fish tug the string hard, are very close to the beach and can be caught on an inexpensive half day jaunt, perfect for a vacationing FAMILY to get on the water and have some fun.
