Roddy's one of the best... The BIg T kwagga and Murray bros lng is one and the same as my Compleat Masher. We market it under several names. Roddy popped a 1302 on that bait. I've personally released two granders on it and dozens of fish 500 or better. Customers have always done well with it.

While we are on the subject of favorite lures I have a question. How many of you use any type of wire for a short leader to your lure. Capt Fred Archer recommends the short leader (four feet or so) at the lure. The wire would proof up the rig for toothy critters and it would seem to me that if limited to four feet would not affect the action of the lure.

I'm somewhat new to using lures (with marlin as the primary target) as opposed to meat and am curious as to your recommended leaders.

IMO a 3'-4- wire lead is a waste and counter productive. If you want to "tooth proof" an artifical skirted lure all that is really needed is to run a wire (stiff rigged) between the head and hook. This will give you 4"-7" a safety, which is pleanty for Wahoo, and I would imagine most Makos.

Yeah, we already using wire hook rigging ala Black Bart. With the cost of lures being what they are and the accessability being difficult on the Carib side of Yucatan, I just want to protect them from loss.

When you say counterproductive, are you saying that because of the lure action or the visibility?

Why have a visible connection when you don't have to? I don't think it will really make a world of difference with Blue Marlin and a wire trace as they aren't that finicky, but why not use every bit of edge possible?--- I don't know squat about lure only fishing, but assuming you are talking about Blue Marlin, I would imagine you'd be using #15 - #19 wire. That's a right good size connection being pulled through the water.

    10 Lures to NOT drag

putting your top 10 in order is like trying to put in order the 10 most beautiful women in the world.

some of my favorites, not in any order

    Joe Yee super plunger
    MM Ruckus
    MM Pear
    MC Wide Range, lg
    Crampton Tube
MM Baby Blue (and Big Blue)
    Kaida Straight Runner, black
    Bomboy Bullet
    MM AP jet, bullet
    Bomboy Magilla
    Bart Brazilliano

see, there's 11, not 10. I couldn't pick one of these to remove from my boat.

How do you kick Kathy Ireland out of bed to make room for Latitia Casta or Eva Longoria?

not on my list & not in my spread
MC Bobby Brown--ask him--he did not even want it named after him
you could nickname this one Rosey O'Donnell

MOST importantly is how you rig & drag them. Get your short bait to work--smoke, plung, etc....and the rest will fall into place, that is, in the mouth of a marlin. When the short bait works correctly, the rest of the spread matters less.
