Mike Zajac, John Timken, Mike Elton, and I decided to take our shot at chunking bluefins on Wednesday. With scattered reports of action in coming from the Mud Hole, Monster Ledge, and Glory, we decided to head to the west side of the Chicken Canyon for larger class of fish. Breaking the inlet at 3:45am, we had a smooth ride out arriving at 5:50am. With scattered bait readings, we decided to drift with the light wind and seas. We set up in 170 ft and drifted down the edge into 205 ft. We ended up catching 5 bluefins in 30-40 lb class on the drift, with 2 on canyon runner hammer jigs and 2 on sardines. We decided to anchor up on the some good readings when we reset and ended up jigging 1 more bluefin and several false albies on bait. One last move proved uneventful as we only caught 1 mahi and 1 albie. By 2:30pm the forecasted 5-10 SW wind was more like 15-20 knots, so we decided to head for the barn. Despite the stiff SSW wind and choppy seas, the 32 Regulator was able to 26.5 knots all the way home.
Total for the trip:
6/6 on Bluefins
1 mahi
A few False Albacore
We forgot the camera, but here is a shot of use trolling earlier in the season. Hope to get out again soon.
