    10/4-5 Tuna Jack report

not alot of northern canyon reports on here so i figured ide post one from the toms this past weekend.

fished the toms overnight. saturday afternoon took some scouting but found fish north of the tip produced a few nice bites and 3 albacore in the box from 40-65lbs. overnight was dead for us.. some boats massacred the swordfish.. unfortunatley we were not one of them.. i released a pup sword around midnight. and to fight falling asleep being the only one in the cockpit i picked up the jigging rod and went to town.. dropped the butterfly to 200ft and began to work, i got slammed immediatley and 400yards peeled off the accurate like nothing with 22lbs of drag.. as soon as i saw backing i locked it up to sunset.. the fish held for awhile but then proceeded to cut the 80lb fluro leader. my guess was a big sword but who knows?

up on the troll in the morning we kept at it until lunchtime and only picked 3 more albacore also in the 40-65 range. Im sure if you just kept pounding out the area you could have a good shot at 10+ fish in a day trip. everything green was the game for us.. GM spreader bars and our ultimate producer was actually a small mexican flag zucker which caught 4 fish for us.

in total 6 longfin, 1 pup sword release, 1 gaffer mahi. 1 longline gear.

i hear you, those yellowfin are very scarce this year and very discouraging to hear of such a good bite off the carolinas right now, we had an excellent start in june and july but then it fell off the table, but i did hear of a few yellowfin being picked up on the flats in the toms.. didnt hear of a slaughter but its a start, although water is cooling fast and they'll be gone before we know it oh well heck of a whitey year for you guys atleast!
