1/27 Boca sails
I ran a charter solo out of Boca Raton yesterday for a couple doctors from NY. One had never caught a billfish before and really wanted to cross the sailfish off his list. Purchased bait from the guys in Lake Boca before heading off. Boy is that inlet in need of some serious attention. Ran north to Boynton and set out 5 baits, 3 on the kite and two flat. Neither of them had kite fished before and were interested in learning. About 30 minutes into the drift a sail came up running circles around the short kite bait. Before he could eat it the man in the grey suit came up to see what was going on and like a kid jealous of another's toy stole the bait from the sail. Ohh well, at least the guys have something to pull on. The next bunch of bites were from mahi, caught 5 with the biggest about 10lbs. Had one mahi eat a gog head from a bait that had been cut off 10 seconds earlier by a kingfish. Next sail came up on the short kite bait and woofed it down, took to the air almost immediately. After a great air show he threw the hook, sailfish 2 angler 0. Next hour brought plenty of cut offs from kings. Owner was getting tired of watching the kite baits so we pulled it in and took to slow trolling live bait. A great rip started to form with a bunch of weeds piling up. As soon as we got close the left rigger popped and another mahi hit the deck. Baits back out and 3 minutes later the right rigger popped and up comes mr. sailfish doing back flips. Typical of the area every boat in a 2 mile radius starts hauling ass in our direction to get in on the bite. 20 minutes later and the fish near the boat for a release. Got a nice pic of the fish jumping on the leader before cutting him loose. Both docs had enough so we called it a day and ran home. 1 for 3 on sails and 6 mahi, felt pretty good about the day since I had not fished that area in a month.
