    March Mashathon!

Started the month off right! Dropped the hard tails looking for slob kings... We were set up near a wreck in 85' and I was on my guard for cudas. The hard tail worms started telegraphing the "oh shit" signal and I expected to see the snaggle toothed sea trouts working them.. These ones had bills and we doubled up early. Two sails out of the gate set the pace... We slid north and I decided to switch to the dead worms.
We had a double of dolphin on the day savers followed by three singles. I think I saw a shadow of another but cant be sure... The bullet bonitos were slow but broke the silence once in a while.
Late in the game we splashed the live ones again and had a double of smokers in the 30 class that we released because nobody wanted them. As I set out a fresh one kingzilla of close to 60 skyrocketed and took the section between the hooks. I don't really like kings but they do provide action. We followed that bite with a single of about 20 lbs and a ratty cuda that wiped out an otherwiise fine $7 bait...
All in all it was a good day and way to start the month...

    OH man!!!

I'd do anything to see a 60lb king AIRSHOT! Let alone catch one.

They are one of my favs to catch hehe, gotta love a smoking run, specially when you can use some lighter line.

Wish you had a pic Deep, if you did, I would end up driving down there.

Oh, hey Deep, got a question for ya.

I know of a few people around here that have gone down to Florida piers, and sight casted cobes and live baited kings, do you know of any of the piers down there? Summer roadtrip to Deep's hood!

Theres one pier to my north, Juno and one that's being rebuilt to the south at Lake Worth. Right now is the king run but tough to get from the piers... They do get a few but very inconsistent. My camera is so bad I can guarantee that I will never catch a king in the air with it. You don't know when its comming or where its comming from. I'm going to get a fast shoot one but still its super tough. You'd have to be waiting and expecting...

Day two added another sail to the year as well as a few mahi and quite a few cudas... We had a late start and the live bait guys had all gone home to bed so it would be a dead bait day. Water was a 74.7 at 80' and the baits were splashed. It jumped to 77.1 at 128' and it was there I began pounding. Fair color change and flyers in there thick but the players were out closer to 200' really hanging on nothing...
We picked a few small dolphin then the pointy one decided to play window shopper on the flats. I hopped back and forth for what seemed to be an eterinty before he settled on the bird bait. I guess I dropped a bit too long because he was hooked deep enough for me to have to cut the leader at release time. Swam away fine but I always worry about them when gut hooked.
I finally got to knock the dust off the gaff on a 8lb dolphin and was just back to speed when both riggers went down with two big holes in the water. I was just sure luck was smiling as the tld25s dumped their contents. Had to be a couple big sloppy yellowfins! Thirty minutes later I put the gaff down in disgust as the first of two slob sixteen cylinder jack crevalles came to the transom...
The antichrist camera is close to the grave and may be burried at sea if the new set of batteries don't bring her right...

    I love your reports deep.

I have been reading about the cobia fishing in Flroida from the piers for quite some time. Guy that fishes the pier i fish from in EI, went down there, caught 4 in a week, all over 35lbs. He said there is a dozen or so HARD CORE guys, that do NOTHING but sight cast for cobes.

He took a few pics with the guys, one guy was around 60, and he emailed me some great stories, and pics of his rods and reels. BEAUTIFUL set of reels. He has two van staals, a gold and black, with cobia engraved on them , on custom marbled rods. He has caught up to 89lb cobes on the PIER. Showed me some pics, and It was crazy.

    Anyways, there I go rambling.

Deep, you are the man, and keep the reports flowing man!

I cant wait til' I can start reporting, becuase NO big feeshes for me til' cobes.

Three straight days produced a sail now but whats weird is they really aren't here. Early half day shot We got a half dozen yummies to sling at kings and the sail was the first thing to bite. Then the snaggle toothed spotted sea trout berry island barracudas found me. The next five baits lasted only about 20 minutes. On the troll the day savers provided a fair number of small bonitos and one summer hummer sized one. The mahi didn't want to play and with a plane to catch my people had to be back early.
I had time to kill, the engines were hot so I decided to do an oil change on the one that didn't force me to do a change last week. I think #90 won the dock pool. That was a pool to see how many times I say the "F" word during a change. The record is 137 .
After that I started my Bimini shopping. I have done this for years but this year there seems to be a marked increase in all the stuff I bring. Doesn't seem like much but a can of green beans that was 65cents is now 89 cents... Do that on a few hundred items and it stings a bit.
We still have room for up to three for the May 1-5 leg... I think the 5-9 leg will be booked come Monday but its first come first serve...

Testerday was a tackle prep and shopping day...

Today started off with a thud... I had some locals hire the boat and I was very specific about it being four man. They even asked for a fifth and I had said no. Well they showed with five. I could see the flags at the marina standing straight out and the promised 5-10 knots would not be happening today. I let them know it was going to be bumpy at best and offered them an out but they wanted to go.
We slid on out and the blue water of a couple days ago was now greenish and the seas an ugly 4-5 with a stray 6'. The compared notes of hangovers and last nights antics and I didn't even have the full spread out before we had one turn green. The radio was full of dead quiet and guys looking for a bite anyplace. I slid across a wreck before the divers showed and at least picked three cudas. The north east had it stacked up in the deep where I thought the fish mught be. Two more guys went green and we now had three laughing at the fish. We boxed a pee wee dolphin and freed a couple small bonitos. The promised updated calming never came and it was clear that it was going to be a long day.
I offered up cutting the day in half around noon and they said no. Then about 1 oclock they finally caved in an hour late but I didn't care. Back at the dock they wanted to renegotiate my half day rate and frustrated I gave in to 50% of a full day although I murn just about as much fuel and other expenses as a full.
As I washed the boat the marina was a cluster. Piss poor boat drivers are the Sunday rule. I forgot how bad it can mbe mid day. Sea Rays doing their best to throw as much wake as they could in a no wake zone and no cop to bust em. Current running and wind pushing weekenders around trying to dock had me play human fender several times. people come and expect their boat to start right up after six weeks of no use and of coudrse they don't. The marina jumper box was drained and they used mine til it was drained... I have nothing against dogs but the owners who bring their poodles down and let them crap on the dock and pretend they didn't see it pisses me off plenty...
Finally I got home and have been rigging stuff since....Finally had a chance to lose the attitude and now I'm feeling better...
