Well waking up to a tornado watch and cancelling my first morning of the month wasn't what I was hoping for. It does give me a few quality hours with my daughter though. The weather is breaking a bit and I should make it out for the afternoon half hopefully with a good report...
Part 2- The weather didn't break enough so the whole day was a wash. Gave me a chance to get caught up on some other chores so it wasn't a total loss...
A solid week of rain to kick off the month spurred me to give it a try yesterday. We did the hero or zero blue marin hunt and well, we got the zero except for one fat skipjack that piled on a hoo/lure combo. This morn I was ready to go but all those bolts comming out of the sky kept me pinned to the dock...
Well another week of crummy weather kept me pinned to the beach. With all the free time I have been getting my mako, tuna and marlin kits together for when I switch gears to the northeast aboard Ken's Intruder... I finally sent the core of my old engine away and can say that my boat is now right back like it should be.
A tropical system looks like it will blow the weekend away too but I'm now running full tilt on preparations for the Jersey gig. I would go tomorrow but I do have trips booked for next week. Hopefully I get out and crush something...
My goodness... I thought I was seeing things last night. There were all these dots of light in the sky and a bigger thing that looked like a backward "C". Then this morning there was a big yellow round thing and blue stuff all over the sky that has been gray for weeks. I had no charter but grabbed some proto type lures I was working on, lanched and went fishing. Rain, dirtied water stretched out to 600+ feet then she got right. Unfortunately the prototypes weren't up to the task of producing yet. We did have one mahi about the size of a lure come jumping into the spread. Maybe to mate?
Any way the phone rang and it was Intruder Ken...
Although booked for months in advance and all kinds of assurances, Our group for the Mako Mania and JCSA shark tourneys came up short on their end of the bargain. So that puts Ken and I with his magnificent Intruder back in the market if you want to fish this most prestigious event. Without patting myself on the back I have been in the money every year I have fished it and that goes back a long way.
Ken is looking one direction to fill the boat and I'm looking this way. Intruder is a 44 Southern Cross fully dressed for combat. The events run out of Manasquan, NJ . Jcsa runs the 24,25 and 26th of June here. Mako Mania runs the 25th and 26th. The purses are both pretty hefty. JCSA and Mania are all mako.
This year shapes up to be the best. Their later start usually misses the big part of the run. Theis year being colder longer should be a home run with the fish arriving right in time for the events. Email or I/M for details. I'm going to guess that there would be no problem staying aboard if you're comming in from out of town for it.
Ken's looking to fill the boat any way we can and will be more than reasonable on the rates. I'm sure staying aboard shouldn't be a problem for those from out of town. Daily or the whole thing is up for grabs.
Went back out today for a couple hours. Again I was alone and testing lures. The new ones were all flops but I did bring along a couple tried and trues and some hoos. I ofund a rip in 700 feet that looked oka nd took a 9lb mahi off it and hdrew a cut bait out of it which I would guess as a small wahoo. Any way it sure feels good just getting out.
Intruder Ken called and informed me our seats for Mako Mania are almost sold out but we do have one left for both saturday and sunday. We still have a few seats for the Friday ebvent and at $250 a man for a purse in excess of $55000 that seems to be a steal! Time is running out let us know!
3 for 4 on sails and 0 for 3 on whites is my kind of day and thats just what we had today! Rock and rolled to stardom and fame with that catch... Also added a dozen bonitos to 20lbs!
Saturday inolved a mountain of mahi and bonitos. We raised two sails that didn't eat and had a big blue try to eat our bonito with no luck though. Blew up a battery on the way home so sundays trip was delayed. It eing a half day involved a mountain of neeters again and some very happy people. Today was grey and spitting rain but no so bad that we couldnt pick off a few more mahi and one more sail.
Thats going to do it for the Florida Action for a few weeks as I head to the promised land for makos!
