Came out of the gate with a flying thud as I had agreed to ride along wth a potential boat and crew at Beach Haven in preparation for the MA500. As a guest my input was not utilized. Though I did make a few minor suggestions they were ignored . I guess the nearly 30 years of tournament experience I bring surely couldn't stack up to the knowledge they have aquired fishing a few times a season for a couple years. In short the catching sucked.
I took a couple days to chill out and let my blood pressure come back down into tripple digits. Yesterday we worked from the glory hole where it was a tad green to just south of the Chicken canyon where the water was nice. We didn't exactly set the world on fire but it was a nice mixed catch of an undersized tuna a few mahi a stray bluefish a few tiny bonitos and a couple skippies. That was followed by taking my mates neice and his girlfriends little brother and sister to a pond where we had a ball with bluegills, a tiny bass and a catfish...
Today found me testing the range limits of my buddies 25 sea craft and sliding to the hudson. The water near the tip lacked much except skippies so we worked out on the east side and found a nice break to like 77 degrees. Two single smallish yellowfin were first to find us followed by a white that we failed to set the steel in. A pair of longfin in the 30 class did find the steel and joined the fins in the box. At one point I could see a pile of peanut dolphin all hopping toward the spread but the baits outclassed them. A second white came in and worked over the spread with embarrasing efficency at not getting stuck til he found the swimming hoo on the bird. Only one jump and a bit of up and down stalemate ensued before Billy let him go. At least it was the right kind.
If I don't find a ride for the MA500 by the time I leave Ocean City , I'm inclined just to call it a short season and head bcak to Florida...
Sent my Ocean City boat Reel Delight, another Albie like mine exploring over the last few weeks. He has been banging with consistency, small tuna and whites between the sausages and poormans with the best being in roughly 35-40 fathoms. I'll be there tomorrow and will see for myself how that area looks and then try down at the other end of town near the Washington on Saturday...
OC practice days produced one out of two whites for us in shallow inside poormans with a small blue train wreck to spice things up.
Day two produced a smooth 2 for 2 catch on the whites at the Washington.
Day 1 of the WMO had a 400lb blue out of the gate and a missed whit a bit later in the day.
Day 2 was a cluster with a score of like 0 for 10 or more. Several different problems there but we had a ball. At least none of the fish were contenders.
Day three saw us raise nothing to loose. A few scattered mini mahi and tuna was all we had to show for our efforts...
So in all we had action. Just the landing part was slow. At this writing we are activly seeking players for the MA500 aboard the Intruder...
