As some of you know I do some stuff in the Keys. One of my better kept secrets is my spot there. My family owns THE eastern most condo in all of the Florida Keys and I thought I should share some of the magic of the place with you all.
Only 60 feet of lawn seperates us from the Atlantic. Theres a deep water channel running along my seawall perhaps 80 feet wide. In this channel it is teaming with snapper, grunt, pinfish, blue runners and some spanish macks by day. The odd Cubera or Grouper shows up there from time to time. By night the tarpon, horseye jacks, goggleeyes and sharks show up. One of my favorite passtimes is setting out a small fish for shark bait on a 30lb spin outfit. Bulls, lemons, nurses, and my favorite blacktips are regulars. In late spring we get the big tarpon eater great hammerheads and I have seen a couple tigers cruise through.
On the other side of the channel is a couple mangrove bushes and a bonefish flat. The ledge along the flat is also a great place for lobsters. On the flat itself we hunt bonefish and permit. Trunkfish, binnethead sharks, and cudas offer great sport in the shallows if the bones etc aren't cooperating.
Outside the flat the water slowly drops to about 20 feet where it stays that depth til the first reef at about three miles off. The reefs there are part of the Pennekamp system. The only living coral reef in the USA. Thats where we anchor and chum for live hoos.
A couple miles past there is the second reef and "the drop" which goes from 30-200 feet in short order. That area has some dandy sailfish, blackfin tuna, wahoo and mahi fishing to be had.
