    Box,

I just copied this and gave it to my son to read. He is a 16 year old mate in his first summer of fishing for pay.

We had a long talk about this very subject yesterday as he watched the partying start at our marina following the Hannman sailfish tournament.

    Nice read. Thanks, MS

I believe drinking is the down fall of 90% of some of the best out there. The thing I dont understand is why people have to get drunk before a tournament fishing day. For instance the WMO its 5 days, fish 3. Thats 3 nights of no drinking early to bed in a year of 365 nights, Im not to sure if that is hard to ask. In my opnion it is kinda disrespectful for a crew member paying or hired to get drunk the day before he fishes. If Im your mate and giving 150% to make things happen and you get drunk and dont wake up tp fish with your game face on, is that fair? If you are one of those people that get drunk and it takes you three days to recover you shouldnt drink at all untill the tourney is over. In my opnion WINNING is a team effort, 100% by all. Hard enough as it is with the competition, your team shouldnt be brought down by a member with a hang over. If your heads not into it and you arnt feeling god stay out of the way, your unclear head could make a stupid decision and cost me a trophy, money, or just the chance to fly one more flag. The rest of the team dosent deserve that. Im not trying to say that before the tourney starts or after it ends I dont try to drink the town dry of rum, but if its before, I always allow two full days for recovery, and if it is after I make sure that Im not going to interfere with what coming up. Not saying Im right but I atleast feel at the end of the week when I get paid I have exerted every effort to give my boss the most productive days of fishing I can. I hope they can say they have done all they can to be the best crew member they can.

Box - I've been away for a while, but have to say that this thread is the HEAT. I've seen a lot of good men (captains and lubbers) who've been taken down by the booze, and especially the "other stuff". Bullet Proof is a pipe dream, there's no man that can do it without paying... one day, somehow.

I've been down the path, and luckily come out the other side okay. And, thanked the Big Guy for looking out for me.

There's a time and place for everything. On board ain't the place, or the time.

Let the salt air intoxicate you. Let the fight of a fish be your "trip"... there's none better or more addicting. (from a guy who's pushed the envelope)
