Radio chatter in my area is not too bad. Most guys hail their buddies on 16 and move to an open channel to discuss their mindless BS. Once in awhile a pair will start chatting on 16, but the coast guard is quick to cut in and tell them to clear the channel. The crowding issue is the same here....all it takes is for one guy to catch a few fish in a certain area, and then every SOB with a boat pounds the hell outta that area for the next 3 days. So you end up with 30 boats all trying to fish a small area, with guys going in all directions.
When someone hooks up a fish, the idiots close in tighter. The fish usually gets cut off by some goof with his stereo blasting, and paying no attention to whats going on around him. Can't hear the guy with the fish screamin at the top of his lungs to "Give Way".

They still do the prayer out of Hatteras and OI and I think I have heard the Wachapreague, VA guys do a prayer when I am on their channel some mornings. I believe Dave on the Godspeed does the prayer in Hatteras. I always make anyone on the bridge be quiet while Dave does the prayer, just seems the respectful thing to do. And it is nice going out single file and not have everyone tear through the inlet 100 mph and in a hurry to get to where they are going 5 minutes before everyone else.

It's not all bad when it turns out right
We were hooked up to our second marlin of the trip. A huge blue girl and I spun the boat for a rundown a ways off and mind you I'm 85 miles offshore. I saw a red hulled express boat and we were heading towards him. I raised him on the radio and advised we had line everywhere and if he could give us some additional space it wouldbe appreciated. He was in no way crowding us actually I was beginning to crowd him now that i'm chasin this fish pointy end first
He acknowledged us immediately and spun his boat so fast I thought he would tagle everything up in his spread. I later found out the boats name was Jelly Bean. He's out of New Bedford and we have identical friends in that community HE WENT ON TO HOOK A HUGE FREAKIN WAHOO AFTER HE MADE HIS TURN and went on he probably would not have nailed it if he had turned to give us extra room We went on to release our best ever marlin est at 700 pounds and we were just as thankfull for all the courtesy he provided to us. In my words it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. As far as MHC is concerned we haven't been down in four years now but again we were given every courtesy possible when we were there. Shoe your spot on with the blow boaters Hey skipper please watch your wake, there's a speed limit here Roger that Fairy Princess were makin 9.8 ![]()

Box you are right on the mark with this one! If I ever get to go fishing again, I'll be on VHF 16- the same channel I've stayed on for years. I HATE VHF BS!!!

Cape Cod
Middle of looking for a sailboat with a woman having a heart attack off somewhere in the middle of the land cut. we are coordinating traffic and trying to identify the boat...
" Cape Cod Canal Control this is the Metro Mania on 16." "Canal Control back to the vessel calling" " Was wondering if you could tell us if this was the fastest way up to PTOWN?" not fishing related but goes along with the topic. |

Its rampant everywhere... Down here we as charterboats have to play hide and seek to stay away from the jaw flappin weekend warriors. Once upon a time it was ch68, we moved to 69, 65, 71, 72, 78, 79... Hell all over the dial. We thought we'd be safe on 19 as that is commercial traffic only. Nope. In no time we had the kids, wimmins, and every 17' skiff from Daytona to Miami on there airing their gums. I get super pissed over in the islands. We'll select a fishing channel or tourney channel and without fail some blowboat frog bitch from Ottowa or Toronto will start sharing recipies with some other blowboat frog bitch from Martinique or Marseilles. I speak enough French to tell them that a fishing tournament is being run on that channel and could they please use another. They come back and ask if they can buy fish and would we like to come have wine with them when theyre done. At Bimini the radio is busy with all kinds of stuff. When somebody starts ordering lunch and yelling though its time to switch it off. Its a no win. I found a way to shut people up the other night though. Distress signals (Flares) were being displayed by a boat swording. When I announced it on the radio and could we get some help in trying to pinpoint his location, the radio went silent. Too damn lazy to reel em in and go help a fellow fisherman in distress. We did... Killed a few hours but got that boat and crew safely in the hands of Coast Guard and back home with no injuries...
