    Yet Another Planer Question

Ok guys here's my situation, I get out <15 times a year so I have no reason to drop 1000 bucks on a planer rod. I do have a tiagra 50W and a TLD 50 on 80-130lb finrazor rods. I'd like to run a #8 or #12 planer off one of these setups. My main question is how long do I make the bridle? the normal 29-31 inches or shorter?

    THanks for any input
    Michael

I haven't run a number 8 on the sniper, but I use the same ole 31" for a #12 - mostly because I haven't had a chance to experiment enough to find out if something else will work. I know the 31" will work and I can switch to larger planers if I need to get down deeper...

I cant tell you the exact measurement for a #8 but if you extend your clips all the way straight you will need enough extra length so the bridle has a little bow in it.This extra bow makes sure the planer trips with no problem.Dont go with to much or it will cause some other issues.

I have a similar setup that I use with a #8. Once you get your clips rigged on your planer, the bridle should be just barely shorter than the planer from clip-to-clip. You need it to be long enough to trip the planer on strike & keep the planer from resetting during the fight, but short enough to keep the tension on the main line.

To be honest, I used to use one that was 3 or 4 inches longer than my planer clip-to-clip. The tension was on the planer & clips until it was detached, but it honestly never game me any problems, and I never had to worry about the planer starting to dig again.

Fin- Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but I imagine you are speaking of the way Marty rigs his bridles. When the planer is tripped,I don't think you want a bow in the bridle. The whole purpose of using the bridle is to be able to fight the fish and be able to take the planer off, using the bridle as part of your main line. If there is tension on the clips as the fish is being fought, you may as well just stick with an in line planer set-up and not worry about a bridle since the planer is taking the stress of the fight.

I don't know, I may be wrong, or maybe you are speaking of another way of doing it. Maybe one of the pros can chime in here even though it seems to be on a smaller scale than they practice.

A #24 planer with the release clips in place measures between 22-24".With the bridle being 31" when the planer trips the load goes straight thru the planer.Only after the planer is unclipped does the load transfer to the bridle. If the bridle was shorter than the planer end to end I believe it would be difficult to freespool trip and would reset much easier when fighting a fish.

Thanks for all the info guys. I may have to get an 80 this summer but I'd like to have a planer for the spring season. I'm looking forward to the video Box.

I know this is about bridels but I just got an 80 and with about 800 yards of braid the braid filled the spool to about 2/3. Do I need to take this off and add more backing or will this work for a planer? Ordered a sniper rod just waiting for it.

YOU ARE GOOD TO GO IMO.... HOPEFULLY NO FISH IS GOING TO TAKE 800 YARDS OFF HOWEVER, I SUGGEST YOU APPLY A BIT OF MONO ONTO THE SPOOL FIRST BEFORE APPLYING BRAID TO ELIMINATE THE BRAID FROM "SPINNING' ON THE SPOOL UNDER PRESSURE IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO.....THE BRAID NEEDS TO "DIG INTO" SOMETING AND THE MONO DOES THE TRICK

THE DRAG IS INCREASED WITH LESS LINE ON THE REEL (2/3 AS YOU SAY ) AND I CONSIDER THAT A GOOD THING
