do you use your planer rod and inline planer for YFT - like this month and next?
Hell yeah I dont always start with it but on slow days it will save the day!
Guess I better find a backing plate!!![]()
Please take this nicely. Save your cash and buy a planer rod setup. There is no short cut and other way to do it. I have tried all variations and setups over the past 2 years because I am stubborn and cheap with not alot of cash.
It cannot be done any easier. Yep, it is alot of cash to spend. But save up, do right take care of it and it should last you a very long time.
BTH Im gonna get an 80 this summer when I can get my VIP pricing from shimano but right now Im not payin retail for one.![]()
Got everything rigged up. Does anyone know how much drag a number 8 old salty pulls? how about a 12?
I've asked that same question about old salty planers. Everything I've ever heard seems to suggest you double the "number" of the planer, and that's about what it will pull in pounds at 6-7 knots. So I guess my answer is 16 for a #8 and 24 for a #12. I've personally tugged on both of those sizes, and I'd say that sounds pretty accurate.
But if anybody has actually strapped one to a scale and tested it, feel free to make me look stupid! I'd definitely love to know if that is not correct.
I pull a #8hs on a 80 Int and found that it takes around 24# to hold it down with some creep, depending on speed and sea conditions. The #8 will not trip like the 12, 16 , 24 will, however I have little trouble cranking it in one turn at a time while feeding the line in the reel with my other hand as I like to run it short anyway. Between 50 and 100 ft between the rod and the planer to keep it under the propwash with another 50-100 ft between the planer and the bait still puts it back a ways.
thanks for the info, I might have to get a #12 too, I'm getting 34lbs max drag with my tiagra 50WA with freespool. WIll a 80-130 straight butt standup rod hold up to this pressure or do I need to get a bent butt for the rod?
