    give me ur location where this happened and i will give you a name of an attorney in you area who will take this case on a contingency basis. if they recover ur $7K (with maybe triple damages on top and interest) then they get 33-40% of that and you get the rest. if they recover zero then you pay zero.

    Box - if you call them and record the call then you gotta disclose up front that it is being recorded. be careful doing it any other way.

    you are smart to not go after them physically, just end up on the wrong side of the law, but legally you should make them pay! Galazio is right, a written agreement would have been best, but you had an oral agreement with them as an independent contractor and if you gave them value, they they owe you value. i bet they settle after they get the attorney's letter, you will never get to the lawsuit.

    I admire emtea for not calling out the person. Usually there is two sides to the story and if he ratted the guy out then the sf.com mafia would unleash a verbal (thats usually about the extent of it) assualt to try and ruin the guys business. I would suggest you straighten it out or invite him to join the site and let everyone know his side of the story. This happened a few years ago on another board about the untimely catch of a giant bluefin in NC. Halfway throught the fight the captain let the charter know the fish belonged to the boat. needless to say it caused a public lynching of the captain which made him finally show up and try to clear his name.

    Emtae - I believe you and it sounds like you were shafted and deserve what's yours. Same thing happened to 2 friends of mine a couple of years ago.

    I agree with Squidnation though- there are 2 sides to every story and I'm very hesitant to jump on anyone until I've heard both sides.

    I say call him up and ask for your money. If he doesn't, tell him you will post who he is on the site and leave it open for him to reply.

    Either that or we can all get together one night and pop a few holes in his hull!!
