just got a phone call from the Biscuit telling me to get off my ass and post a report....thanks for the camera/computer tip, it worked!
forecast looked a little iffy for offshore and BTH was itching to drag the boat down and run it a bit. so what the hell....we will go try and catch a cobia or maybe some spanish.
i was a little worried we would have to run and look a bit to find bait so we put the boat in around 0430. decided to slip up motts channel and see what we could see before making the trek south to more of a sure thing on that bait. very few flips, but i noticed a little surface disturbance in the glare of a dock light and rode over to investigate. turned out to be a big schoo,l of 6-7" pogies swimming on top. one burrito'd throw()of the cast net by BTH secured all the bait we would need.
got to the spot and dropped anchore a few times trying to get it right. baits in the water before 0600. i was once again worried it was going to be a parking lot but we were the first to arrive and secured the coveted spot. boats started to arrive after about 40 minutes. bluefish were devouring our baits. about 730 i was standing next to one of the rods on the bottom when i seen the tip bob a few times and the baitrunner drag click a little. i fed a few pulls of line out figuring it to be another trash fish. took a few cranks on the reel to engage the drag and the rod doubled over as the circle hook stung a good fish. the fish immediatly came to the surface and narrowly missed the lower unit on the boat of one of our local old salts and cobia masters, Chappy. then he headed for the rocks and almost made the turn into the inlet, but i manged to turn him. the fish then proceeded to tangle into a few lines of one of our local charter captains while taking me for laps around the boat and under and over the anchor line.....what fun. finally got him up and BTH laid the steel to him.
got our mess back out and got chewed on by bluefish, sharks, and rays for 2 more hours. had a little immature loggerhead come up behind the boat. we looked hard for any fishy followers but did not see any. 5 minutes later one of our freelines baits was inhaled. short battle and the steel is sunk to another fish, this one shorter, yet legal so in the box he went.
got our mess back out and fed the blues for another hour or so and they finally managed to eat us out of bait around noon.
not a bad way to spend a half day.....i think we looked like we knew what we were doing, but really got lucky and managed a couple nice fish. and i bet we didnt burn 2 gallons of fuel! thanks for coming down Bryan.
the first fish....43.25 lbs
both fish at the cutting table....
and we notcied this when before cutting....the fish was completely missing his left pectoral fin. pretty odd considering the pec fins on cobes are so prounounced and relied upon for mobility so much. dont know what could have done it either.
