Wrightsville Beach Report 4/26/08 Close Encounters

Started off this morning headed up the beach to the high 200's lookin a gaffer edge the guys were on yesterday. After a 2.5 hr run we set out mid 200's up inshore of the change and grass edge we were looking for on a few scattered boards. Picked a mid 40's wahoo and 3 mahis then worked on off to the warm water grass edge. Fished up and down 10+ #'s steady picking mahis and another upper 30's wahoo. After hearing of a few blue marlin hook ups and releases we decided to work up the grass edge another 20 #'s to almost the 300 line. Well around 2 or so we get another mahi on a dink pole and Derek is cranking it in i guess about a 10-12 lb fish then from out of no where about 20 ft off the transom i see a shadow come up under the mahi and there she is blue marlin rolled up on her side mouth open ready to eat our mahi. I holler down to get a bait over to her Matt throws a bait, Josh throws one and i get my mouse trap over to her but no dice as fast as she came she was gone all we had to show for it was a mahi with a foot long bill mark down its side. To bad nice fish i'd guess 400 or so i got a good look since all this happened 20 feet or less from the transom. We ended up with 2 wahoo's and 16/17 mahi's we kept 12, threw back 4 or 5 small slingers. Could have caught all the slingers you wanted in the grass but the call of blue marlin beckoned. From what i heard on the radio on our end 5 blue ones released and a sailfish and atleast 4-5 others seen or pulled off. One fish caught on the Buck Wild was about 475 according to Capt Parrish Warren after a 2 hr battle on a 50. So pleanty of action on our end today with low to mid teens mahis and a few scattered wahoo's and blue ones to boot just wish we could have got that one to eat a bait behind our rig but was pretty cool to see none the less.

Good fishing John! Plenty of action and a drive by by the man himself. Definitely worth the price of admission.
Thanks for the report & where are the pictures?

Congrats to the Trophy crew. Great catch along with the encounter with the blue suited one. Sounds like the mahis have brought some predators along with them.
