    Wrightsville beach bottom bouncin 2/11

Bottom fished yesterday out of wrightsville beach. Seas were a little sloppy in the morning but not too bad so we headed off to our first spot. It was kinda slow at our first couple spots but eventually got on a good ledge and put some groupers in the boat. We had 10 keeper reds 2 about 24 inches, 1 scamp, and a slob of a gag that weighed in at 22.1 pounds. My first citation grouper. The gag came on a seven seas hooker jig that he hit as soon as it hit the bottom. Arlen lived up to his title as president of ASS (Amberjack Sportsmans Society) landing one about 40 lbs on the jig. All in all it was an awesome day on the water with slick seas for the ride home. Could not have asked for a better trip.

Thanks for the compliments. I love jigging. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite methods of fishing. I want to get on some tuna and wahoo on a jig bad. I feel pretty confident that it can happen.

Not only CAN it happen, but DOES happen all the time. As you know our brothers to the north have been jigging tunas for ages.
I have no doubt that with your passion for the stuff (combined with your young, strong back!) you'll soon get your shot at tuners, wahoos and everything else that swims out there.
If you fish it enough, they'll eat it.

What rod and reel handled the gag?

I know it happens elsewhere but im ready for it to happen to me off of the North Carolina coast. It was my new jigging rod. The rod is a smith AMJ and the reel is a shimano twinpower 8000. The reel is an equivalent to the US Sustain but it feel much smoother to me and it puts out 35-40 pounds of drag. It is awesome reel. The rod is designed specifically for jigging and is only 5'4" and almost half of it is the butt section. It is a different looking rod but it is incredible how much power that rod has. Similar to a trevala but much better and more powerful. Arlen has a picture of me fighting the fish. I ll get him to post the picture and you can really see the rod in action.
