    Wire leader?

When fishing this past Saturday we were hooked up on a sail for about 10 seconds when the line went slack, while reeling in I could tell it took it all with him. When I got the line back to the boat the wire had broke at the swivel, there was about a 1centimeter piece of the wire still on the swivel, not sure how it stayed on but it was there. Can anyone point out what I may have done wrong with my haywire, or any other opinions, observations or similar mishaps like the one I had?
This may be of importance or not, he came on the flat for a second then came off, I dropped back giving him a little time to get on but he was swimmig parralel to the transom which caused a little slack before I pushed the drag up. Thanks for any input.

You may have gotten a kink in the wire when the line was slack and when the fish came tight it broke into. Had you caught anything else on that rig before the sail came along? I know most of the times after catching a king,aj,pompano or any hard fighting fish we trash the rig because the leader wire is no longer straight. If we reused it with the waves in the wire it would cause it to kink thus breaking off.

Corroded spot or kink. Have also seen it happen when haywire loop will lay back over the swivel and bind up

Another thing I am learning is to keep a pitch bait handy when fishing wire. Tough to keep it buttoned while dropping a length of wire bait and lure vs naked dink and small hook on a dink rod/reel.

thanks, I am leaning towards the wire laying over the swivel on the drop back. I guess things like that will happen with wire on a drop back with a billfish or any fish for that matter. Any more suggestions or theories on what I coulda/shoulda done are very much appreciated?(damn I almost feel like the so called homelss guy in the median askin for donations..ha)

If your bill fishing why are you using wire for the pitch bait. We've always used floro for leaders on pitch baits.

Asking and learning is one of the best things here. Sept-nov here in nc lots of wire rigs used meat fishing. Have had the wire layover and break several times on the planer rod.
