It depends on the size of your boat and how bad you want to fish. Not to mention tunas like the rough water, can't see your leader as easily. To me 42 sportfisher 4-6ft waves, I want to fish and might get beat up a little on the way out but will get over once you start catching fish.
Also look at the wave period, if the waves are 2 sec apart then it would be terrible, chop. If they are 10-12 seconds apart it can be 8 ft waves and be a gentle rolling swell.
We fished OI last week for three days straight. On Friday afternoon the seas started to build. XM said the buoy was reading 3-4s with a 3 second period 18.7 knt winds. For my boat it was marginal fishing and was a pretty snotty ride back in for the first 15 miles. If it would have been 8-10 seconds it would have been fine but that 3 second period is a killer.....Mark
If you gotta ask...don't go out of Hatterras when it's 4-6. Pick a better day.

Absolutely depends upon the boat... Don't go if you are going to have the mentality of "well, I'm here so I have got to fish." This has gotten many, many people in trouble... A lot of times you just won't know until you hit the ocean.
Anything over 3 and Im at the docks
Personaly I love the slop, chop and big waves, some of my biggest tuna have been caught in angry water.
Tip: If you know its gonna be "sporty" while fishing make your sandwiches on bread so you don't have to chase your hoagie around the cockpit.
I think we are going to try to go out of OI we are fishing a 35 ft everglades .
Go man go, 10 sec dominant period. Its going to be a rolling swell
