Marty do you remember a couple of years back during the bluefin season in MHC a guy from up Massachusetts or Rhode Island caught a huge king, 67# core, while he was tuna fishing. the guy didnt know what it was either way and they buyer bought it as a wahoo. Got like $6 a pound for it. I remember seeing that thing and couldnt believe it was a king not a wahoo. Guy showed me the head... must have been a 80 maybe 85 pound king. Biggest one I ever saw by a longshot. We caught a 63# king down there while tuna fishing and this other thing would have ate it.
Biggest wahoo I ever saw was on the release boat out of hatteras when I was about 13 years old. We had four bites all at once. 3 were sails and the fourth bite was while we were fighting the sails (we ended up catching 2 of the 3) we hooked a huge wahoo. The sails were quickly released and when we finally got the hoo to the back of the boat, it was a stud. Capt. wanted to lip gaff it because he thought it might have been a state record. Mate dicked around with it and ended up letting it get away. 100+ easy.
Biggest I ever caught on my own boat was 79.
Had a 69# that caught me. Bout bit me toes off.
Alot of those pics show guys with flip flops on in the cockpit with some big ol hoos. I speak from experience. that one can hurt.
