What's up with the Mercury levels in fish?

What’s up with the Mercury levels in fish? Back in the day the docs said to forget the apple a day thing and eat fish for your health. Now every time you turn around another one of your favorite table fares is added to the mercury warning list. Should we all retire from fishing and start nothing but a diet of rabbit food? Is there any credibility to the government warnings or is this just a big CYA from the government for not policing the coal burning energy plants (which I’ve been told id the main source of rising mercury in our oceans)?

THe mercury is legit but doesnt need to be worried about too much, the larger the fish is typically the more mercury it will have due to biological magnification, this is where the amount of poison in this case mercury will increase as you rise in the food chain because larger fish have to eat many smaller fish to get the nutrients and energy they need. So if you stick to 40-80lb tunas you shouldnt have much to worrry about health wise, when it comes to bigger swordfish and giant bluefins, well i dont think any of us catch and eat enough of them for damage to be done

with a pregnant wife, we were told by her Doc. to watch the amount of fish she eats. They even have pamphlets in the office about which fish to avoid. The few I remember that are totally off limits for a pregnant woman: swordfish, any type of mackerel, and tile fish.

as far as tuna, no more than 6 oz's/week.

I can assure you that this is nothing to laugh about. If the levels are this high in pelagic and prolific species such as Tuna and Marlin then maybe we should think about what it is doing to the smaller members in the food chain.

Take for instance Menhaden. Natural filters for the water that are being killed in huge amounts. With the amount of run off people are creating, farmers included, it may be wise to keep as many natural filters that we can.

Just think we would have to do nothing except stop people from killing them. None of your TAX DOLLARS will be required.

I do not know about you but I have never bought that omega 3 pill off the 800 number on TV. To me at the cost of our waters I will find something else to make money off of or to eat.
