I cut my teeth as a mate on a boat called the Full House. She was a rough looking boat and the optimal boat for a first time mate. Well I was asked to sub for one of the elite boats of the fleet on Sept 5, 198something. The boat was the My Desire. Now known as the Muff Diver. The Captain was none other the Bill Knessi - now capt of the My Desire out of Sunset. It was an unbelievable day. We caught 9 species of fish. BTW - If anyone can guess the 9 species I will send you a free Daisy Chain (I will send them out to the first 3 people that guess correctly).
Anyway - around 10:30 am we had a strike on the right short rigger, Nice blue marlin around 300lbs. We got the angler in the chair and commenced clearing and fighting. I know as a mate I am not supposed to get excited but this was my first blue as well. I was going nuts. I looked up on the bridge and saw Capt Knessi bowed over on the bridge pole. He had that penn on FULL and the line was ripping. He was surely seeing something up their that we were not seeing. Double header Blue Marlin and the one he had on was a pig. Capt Bill chose to break his off. His reason was that we would stand a much better chance getting the one we had in the chair. I would never question his reason and we did get that blue. But my question is, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Being it was my first Blue as a mate I know he made the right decision. Plus he said the one he had was much bigger and would pose a problem. IF this were to happen now I might try to get both of em. We also caught a white marlin and a 68lb yellowfin. Now can you guess the other 6 species.
