Ask questions, what can i do to help you out, you thirsty...hungry? The mates can usually feel you out pretty quickly, if your not up to bat on a fish...ask him what line to clear, when a fish hits the deck...the mate will respect a guy that tries to be first to the raw water wash down hose to clean the deck up...than the guy that tries to be first to the pole with a fish on it.Pay attention when he puts the spread out, that way when you do clear a line....you can re deploy it...third wake back right....he will see your paying attention and let you become more involved. Have a positive attitude....if its slow, trust me he knows it. If you want to rig a bait.....watch him do it and ask why he did this or that...after hes done, not while hes in the middle of doing it....9 times out of 10 they will give you a crack at it. At the end of the day...take care of the mate, hooper might drive the boat chief.....but the mate is the hardest working guy on that boat.
