What else is needed?
Okay guys, with the rebuilt seabird in play now, I was wondering what else I need before heading offshore. I don't have any fancy equipment, but I do have 3- 6/0 Penn Senators, 3-TLD 25's, a 4/0 Senator, a 9/0 Senator and a 850 penn SS spinning reel for plugging. I have a gaff, and coolers, and outriggers. I have a few plastics and a few sea withces and a few ilanders. What else do I need? I think I remember someone saying something about a tuna permit? Any new regs I should know about? What am I missing, what else do I need?
yes you need an HMS license (highly migratory species) if targeting tuna (YFT and BFT) at least as well as any billfish. not sure about mahi thought in your area. you should also beware of size and amount limits which will vary from area to area....hope this helps. SAFETY EQUIPMENT!

Don't mind at all. Thanks for the info. That HMS site is very informative, thanks for the link. As far as the 21st century I agree. I plan on getting 2- tld 50's and probably 2- 50 Tiagars as well in the spring/early summer. Those 6/0's need the dust knocked off of them as well as line replacement. I have a big spool of 50lb waiting on me at the tackle shop.
Box as much as much as I wouldlike to get rid of the 4/0, I can't. It was the 1st true saltwater rod that I ever had. It was a birthday present form my folks when I turned 14. Yep that's right 14. I have that rod and reel for 21 years now. It is a all roller rod and has caught just about every type of larger fish. Amberjack, Drum (both types), dolphin, yft, bft, rockfish, albecore, wahoo, mako, bluefish, kings, and I hate to say it but it has also caught at least one croaker. So I have to keep the 4/0. Of course it could stay in the rack in the shed.
Thanks for the input, keep it coming. It has been quite some time since I was in the offshore game and lots as changed.
Oh yeah, I'm 99.9% sure the name of the boat will be "HollyBrooke" Named after my two girls.
