What to do?

Got a 9/0 penn senator with a 7' heavy action action rod with rollers all the way up. Spooled with what I am guessing is about 200lb dacron. It is a full spool. Almost too full. I paid $20 at a garage sale for the rod and reel. Yes I said $20.

The reel is in good working order but the rod is to long I think. I figure I'll take at least 1/2 the dacron off and save it for something else. What I do not know. Thinking like a 5'6" or 6'0" Rod with guides.

Question 1 - If you had a 9/0 reel with half a spool of Dacron what line what you put on top of it?

Question 2 - What type of rod would you get for it?

Question 3 - Would you keep the Dacron or strip all of it off and go straight mono?

Any input is appreciated.

I'd Grouper fish with it...big old live bait on it and let Rodny the rod holder do the rest.

I would use spectra topshot and a short, stout, bent butt, swivel tip top rod with wind ons. This outfit would pull planers, dredges & kites. It could also be used for deep dropping or heavy bottomfishing.

Without knowing how old the dacron is, I would pull it all off. Some people think that half way down the spool is safe. I feel that the fish that gets you out that far is the one you want to be sure you have new/good line for. Better safe than sorry.

with the rings..i would go with the bigger ring that i sent you. that ring is made for wire line, and it holds up a little better.. most of the time

I'd fill it with either monel or stainless wire with a bunt butt rod and make a nice wire line outfit to do some high speed trolling from spot to spot with, or just put it out any ole dayto mix it up in the spread.

I pick up old senators (9/0, 10/0 and 11/0) from time to time...The ones with the s.s. spools....We pack them w/ 80-100 lb wire and put them on short stubby bent butt rods...Probably the most effective outfit for high speed trolling and/or slow grouper trolling...Popular in the islands and South Florida
