when i wake up the next morning i hear the engines running....i could barely see through the amount of chrome gnats, but i could tell there was someone standing over me.....My Brother in law!!! WAKE UP RICKY.....WERE LEAVIN!!!!!! i stumble out of the bedroom and realize we are on are way....it was noon!! How long have we been fishing is the only thing i could manage to say.....apparantly we all had a pretty rough morning and we had just left! so i quickly get a shower...try to revive myslef with a philsen and some pineapple and make it up to the bridge......First thing i see is a giant sail free jumpin in the distance....HOLY CHIT! there he is!..........lets go check him out...Nah, im not were i want to go yet.....then another one...and another one...i think i saw 12 billfish free jump before i finally realized.....i wasnt in cape may any more.............so i finally go down stairs and apologize for my behavior the night...and yell at the two brothers for getting me so tanked before we were supposed to go fishing!!!

Line go in, spreads been laid out.....and were off. The humm of the motor matched the humming from my headache....it was rough (but it was great at the same time)....no more than 10 mins go by and we got up in the spread...pitchin a bait to him...aobut a 175lb. 200+ sailfish....Im ecstatic......

"Ricky....he is all yours, get your butt over here!!" so i put the belt on and were off.....captains backing down like a maniac....waters is drenching me..(I AM TOTALLY AWAKE BY NOW) and he is released.......Awesome!!!!.....sent the spread back out...and 5 mins pass and theres another one.....RICKY ITS ALL YOU....... multiply that by 18....yes 18.

my butt was whipped from front to back........everybody thought it was hilarious....im in the corner of the cockpit by number 12 sayin i cant catch another one!!!...they called bs and straped the shoulder harness on me. 17 sails and a blue.....nothing has ever topped that day since then.....It was a dream, and i sometimes still cant believe it happened. once we decided to pull everything in and head back....it was around 5pm............im helpin put everything away and out of the corner of my i i see one brother lunge to the left and one to the right. they had me by both sides....picked me up....and yelled 1......2.......3 - they must have thrown me about 15 feet off the boat in to the middle of the pacific ocean.......im cursin, and yellin and gagin on water ( i wasnt prepared at all)..................they finally get me back up...and all i hear is "thats what you get for sayin you cant do it"

Those words have never left my lips again. When we got back in........i was showered and dressed and ready for another night out......with out the rum

sounds like a hell of a trip! could you even swim after reeling in all those fish? i probably would have sank like a stone! ahahha

It was October of 97, our annual overnight tuna trip on the ursula out of sea isle, i put 12 yellow fins from 75-90 lbs in the box, couldn't do nothing wrong that night.....my uncle worked this live squid for 2 hours without a bite, i had already put 6 in the box and was keeping the chunk going when he decided he had enough and was going to get some shut eye. So i dropped that slimy little sucker down and it didn't make it 10 feet off the stern and it was fish on...Now not wanting to be a fish hog i tried passing the next 2 hook ups off but the guys were too proud to take a hand off, they wanted to feel the runoff and cross the tunas eyes themselves....cant say that i blame them.So its midnight and i have put 9 fish in the box so far, a few guys are getting some sleep and there's 3 of us working the late shift...after a little lull in the action i started getting bit again, i would land a fish and then the next 2 drops would hook up immediately, didn't matter if it was the flat line or one with 10 oz of led.....drop down and the tuna were committing suicide on it. By 1;30 am i had 12 tuna in the box and it slowed down, since there were 6 of us +mate&captain that meant we could keep 24 tuna...with 20 in the box we decided put out a few fillets for a mako and leave the other 4 empty slots for the guys snoozing their trip away. We didnt have the spread out more than 20 minutes when a decent 150 lb mako came buzzing through the lights...no sooner did we say did you see that it looked like a zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz never got to finish the sentence and we were hooked up, my cuz put a whuppin on that fish in short order and a well placed slug from an old 308 the cappy had on board and we tied that baby off for a bit.We made a move around 4 am and that woke up the sleepy heads, we got the chunk going again...and since i filled a good portion of the box i designated myself the chunking ***** for the duration of the chunk. The boys picked a few and we went a good hour and a half without a bite and i hear the grumblings of...were gonna pack it in soon here fellas, we got a long ride back....so i grabbed a rod and slapped a frisky mac we had swimming in the bait well and sent it down for one last shot......that mac didnt make it very far and i was hooked up again....this time one of the boys was more than happy to relieve me of the pole and top out our limit....24 yellow fins and a 150 mako...A dam fine night if you ask me....aside from the catching it was a crystal clear night and the sky was spectacular....i couldn't do nothing wrong i tell you..i had the touch, graduated from being called junior since i was the youngest guy in the group to being called slayer....as far as fishing goes it was some of my finest hours.

My best day offshore was last spring during the Inaugural Martinis HOOK A HOO RODEO. After planning the weeks fishing and untold hours of planning and execution, we finally ventured offshore with 41 boats competing for $10,000. $10,000 you say....Whoop TEE Doo!! So what?

I'll tell you so what, one boat two friends with grandfather, son, grandson and grandaughter all enjoying a great day on the water with one intent.....to raise money for the SHRINERS HOSPITALS of the CAROLINAS. And raise money we did....$10,000 was donated and we only caught one fish. But it was the best day offshore ever!

I agree with Marty, too hard to pick just one

    1. First canyon run at age 12. 6 guys on board and all 8 rods covered with bigeye. We boated 3, smallest was 235 (and I landed mine). Start of a lifelong addiction (does that make it my worst day?)

    2. Charter with my buddy Fred out of Hatteras - we each caught 1 of everything - wahoo, tuna, whites, dolphin and blue marlin

    3. Catching a 535 mako at age 16 to win the tourney and get an ovation at the dock

    4. watching my dad fight a 700 plus mako for 6 hours on a penn 6/0 only to have the leader part at the boat

    5. First trip to CR - crazy amounts of big sailfish

    6. Anytime my kids catch their personal best

Probably my favorite - down in the keys with nothing to do on a beautiful day, so I took Di for a ride. ran out to the edge of the reef and conditions looked good for sails, so I put out the 2 livies I still had from the day before. She ended up with a 70 lb sail on 12 pound tackle, probably the coolest fight ever. got the release 7 miles from where we started.
