Every time I get offshore is my best day on the meat or not. Why, because terra firma gets boring![]()

It was October of 97, our annual overnight tuna trip on the ursula out of sea isle, i put 12 yellow fins from 75-90 lbs in the box, couldn't do nothing wrong that night.....my uncle worked this live squid for 2 hours without a bite, i had already put 6 in the box and was keeping the chunk going when he decided he had enough and was going to get some shut eye. So i dropped that slimy little sucker down and it didn't make it 10 feet off the stern and it was fish on...Now not wanting to be a fish hog i tried passing the next 2 hook ups off but the guys were too proud to take a hand off, they wanted to feel the runoff and cross the tunas eyes themselves....cant say that i blame them.So its midnight and i have put 9 fish in the box so far, a few guys are getting some sleep and there's 3 of us working the late shift...after a little lull in the action i started getting bit again, i would land a fish and then the next 2 drops would hook up immediately, didn't matter if it was the flat line or one with 10 oz of led.....drop down and the tuna were committing suicide on it. By 1;30 am i had 12 tuna in the box and it slowed down, since there were 6 of us +mate&captain that meant we could keep 24 tuna...with 20 in the box we decided put out a few fillets for a mako and leave the other 4 empty slots for the guys snoozing their trip away. We didnt have the spread out more than 20 minutes when a decent 150 lb mako came buzzing through the lights...no sooner did we say did you see that it looked like a zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz never got to finish the sentence and we were hooked up, my cuz put a whuppin on that fish in short order and a well placed slug from an old 308 the cappy had on board and we tied that baby off for a bit.We made a move around 4 am and that woke up the sleepy heads, we got the chunk going again...and since i filled a good portion of the box i designated myself the chunking ***** for the duration of the chunk. The boys picked a few and we went a good hour and a half without a bite and i hear the grumblings of...were gonna pack it in soon here fellas, we got a long ride back....so i grabbed a rod and slapped a frisky mac we had swimming in the bait well and sent it down for one last shot......that mac didnt make it very far and i was hooked up again....this time one of the boys was more than happy to relieve me of the pole and top out our limit....24 yellow fins and a 150 mako...A dam fine night if you ask me....aside from the catching it was a crystal clear night and the sky was spectacular....i couldn't do nothing wrong i tell you..i had the touch, graduated from being called junior since i was the youngest guy in the group to being called slayer....as far as fishing goes it was some of my finest hours.
My best day offshore was last spring during the Inaugural Martinis HOOK A HOO RODEO. After planning the weeks fishing and untold hours of planning and execution, we finally ventured offshore with 41 boats competing for $10,000. $10,000 you say....Whoop TEE Doo!! So what?
I'll tell you so what, one boat two friends with grandfather, son, grandson and grandaughter all enjoying a great day on the water with one intent.....to raise money for the SHRINERS HOSPITALS of the CAROLINAS. And raise money we did....$10,000 was donated and we only caught one fish. But it was the best day offshore ever!

I COULD GO ON AN ON...SORRY FOR RELIVING SO MANY MOMENTS
I agree with Marty, too hard to pick just one
1. First canyon run at age 12. 6 guys on board and all 8 rods covered with bigeye. We boated 3, smallest was 235 (and I landed mine). Start of a lifelong addiction (does that make it my worst day?
)
2. Charter with my buddy Fred out of Hatteras - we each caught 1 of everything - wahoo, tuna, whites, dolphin and blue marlin
3. Catching a 535 mako at age 16 to win the tourney and get an ovation at the dock
4. watching my dad fight a 700 plus mako for 6 hours on a penn 6/0 only to have the leader part at the boat
5. First trip to CR - crazy amounts of big sailfish
6. Anytime my kids catch their personal best
Probably my favorite - down in the keys with nothing to do on a beautiful day, so I took Di for a ride. ran out to the edge of the reef and conditions looked good for sails, so I put out the 2 livies I still had from the day before. She ended up with a 70 lb sail on 12 pound tackle, probably the coolest fight ever. got the release 7 miles from where we started.
