Well I swore I wouldn't do it....but now I'm glad I did
Those flat seas called my name and as much I wanted to sit on the dock and just watch all the crazies pass by, I headed out right through the middle of them.
Left the dock at 5:30am, made 31 knots all the way out to the Steeples. Two commercial boats, one center console and two freighters were the only company we had out there. Stopped short in 20 fathoms and pushed on off to 60. Trolled around a while with no luck at all and then bam, right rigger gets hit....notice I say hit and not popped. Big saildog. I grabbed the rod and had to jerk twice to get the damn thing loose but luckily she still takes the bait. Comes tight or so I think, jumps twice in all of about two seconds and our party comes to an abrupt end. Probably, pulled the trigger a little to quick on the drop back, but hey, first billfish bite on this boat, who isn't going to be a little excited?
Troll on for a while longer and boredom sets in, not helped by the massive amounts of marks on the sounder. So we drop down two jigs and bam, two nice scamps. Lose a couple rigs and later two more came up for our first ever mess of keeper grouper on the boat.
Had to be home early, so we stopped by the tower just to say hello and then on to the house. 4 hours of gunning, and 5 hours of sunning and funning, worth every minute.
A fantastic day with my Dad, little brother and his girlfriend and a good buddy of mine. So good I could only mildly cuss the idiots that cut me off between masonboro and figure eight..
