My friend Matt (JMS-ILM) is a surf fishing throw back. I know a handful of old timers who walk the beaches with nothing but a mirrorlure and a plugging rod. Many years of scouting and learning makes these guys special. When you see them on the beach, you know there's fish there.
Young Matt is wise beyond his years when it comes to studying the breakers. When the weather starts cooling and the fish bunch up in the surf, it's his time!
He found some fish over the weekend and was kind enough to share with a couple of friends today. Four of us threw mirrorlures (all kinds) for about one hour right at sunset.
Matt, rightfully, hooked the first one:

The school stayed put for a few minutes and we all got a few fish out of it.
Matt and Doug with a double (speck & drum). Jeremy was also hooked up and I was taking pictures!
I caught a quick 3 or 4 and decided to try the top dog. Breaking surf gives you little opportunity to fish the topwater bait, but when it comes together, you can see your fish surfing the wave coming after your plug. I was lucky and got to see one up close:
The sunset over the marsh looked and felt great:
In a bit less than one hour we caught and released 23 slot drum and 8 specks. Thanks to Matt, we all had an opportunity to welcome old man winter properly.
Thank you Matt,
