    WB jigging the break 4/11

Went out with cbaker77 and stormtrooper yesterday on chip's boat. It wasn't the prettiest of days, but we chugged our way out to 800+ feet. When we got there I am not being liberal by saying we could have powered down, faced south, and put out a spread of ballyhoo. 5+ kt current.... Managed to boat a few decent snowies, but it was very difficult going. We would go .1 nm ahead of our desired mark, keep the motors in gear and drop off the bow, and upon reaching the bottom, be .3 nm on the other side....

Moved in to the break to be greeted by an almost equally strong current where we managed a few big albies and amberjacks on jigs. Chip boated a 101 lb fish that had gash marks all in it, and we were greeted by a mako that at least doubled the AJ in size. While i rigged the heaviest wire ballyhoo rig we had in the boat (as that's all the wire we had) I saw chip holding the AJ on a hand gaff while the mako thrashed with its tail section!! I took a hunk of albie and dropped it to him, and watched the beautiful, irridescent blue fish suck it down, BWC jag and all! When he finally swam away from the boat (30 sec after eating) I put the screws of the 80W to him and chip hammered the throttle. I backed off the drag and the fish finally knew he was hooked, ran briskly for about 30 yds and decided to bite through the wire. It stunk to lose him, but what a beautiful animal to see, and even play with for a while. When he ate the albie steak I could have pet him!

All in all a slower day than usual, and it was rough fishing for us. But you need trips like this to learn and grow as an angler, and because they really help embolden the good ones. You can't complain when you get to the dock after a less than desireable day 70 mi offshore and all you have is sunburn. No pics this time.

    Cheers,
    Arlen

Thanks for the report Arlen. Doesn't sound like too bad a day to me. Petting a mako alone makes the day worth it man!
Glad y'all got to get out. Seems we'll have to wait a while before we can run again.

Did not see the report was already posted so I reposted. It was a pretty frustrating day but the mako made it worth while.
