The time when we run lures run way back is generally in summer. For whatever reason it's not difficult to pull short bites on BET in spring but the big tunas in summer tend to hit long baits. The boats that do best on the big summer tunas - average 70/75 kilos up to over 100+ kgs seem to run medium lures quite far back off long outriggers and center riggers. Maybe, as they believe in Hawaii, the big ones cruise deep and take some time to come to the surface. Most Hawaii fishermen that target big yellowfin run lures pretty long normally counting arm spans if conditions are too rough to place a lure on the wave. I'm not sure what's the best distance but around the 7th to 8th wave is a good place to start if you're running a center rigger, 5th to 8th if it's run off the long rigger. I think it's important to avoid line and leader dragging in front of the lure. Shorten up the lure if you see this. Yeah, it's hard to see a whitey coming up on the lure but it's normally being run on 80 lb tackle with 9/0 or 10/0 hooks, your chances of hooking up are pretty poor anyway.

I've done very little time after Blue Fin, but they seem to be a bit of a different animal to the other tunas. Giants just don't seem to like a fast bait as much as something trolled at 3-4 knots. The quieter the boat the better, too.

    You Have a great point

I know Giants will hit at the stern I have seen them do it. I also know that in Morehead you get a great run of Giants sometimes as shallow as hell right off the beach. Now I don't know why those fish bite so aggressively in the winter but I have a theory. I have caught large bluefin off nova scotia in the late summer early fall and these fish are full of fat lines through the meat meaning they have been feeding heavy in prep for their journey south. I ahve caught bluefin off OCMD in November that when steaked out have virtually no fat in them, thats the last stop before they winter in the carolinas I feel that when these fish get to the obx they are ravenous and strap on the food bag and feed aggressively making them more apt to aggresion. Do what you will with my theory. As far a trolling wwb for marlin its a bad idea I think unless you troll plastic with the theory of big hole bent pole which I imagine works. I also have caught yellowfins wwb on the troll. But don't usually target them that way just caught them as a bycatch when fishing for bft.

As for trying to cause a ruckus when trolling for yft again I must go with what I find effective. I think yft fishing for me on my boat comes down to one spreader bar on the short rigger and nine to ten ballyhoo all with sea witches or naked with 130 wind ons all flurcarbon with chin weights. The last lure might be a blue and white Islander on 300 in MR blue comes calling. Now I think YFT fishing is easier off Delmarva then off the carolinas I think you obx guys have to work a little harder for your fish. In my opinion yft in the nice gulfstream water you have there tend to be a little more leader shy and skittish. Hence the use of fluro/dangler rigs/ mini green sticks/ kites with flying fish and so on its all a attempt to get the leader either out of the water or make it invisible and I have a theory about this have any of you seen that little v you leader makes ahead of your bait that little wake I feel that when fishing skittish tuna that can really turn the fish off. Now when I yft get up in this blended blue water or green water I think they bie better

Nice video. I agree with not being able to see the wwwback bait, but have caught some fish on it. The "at the boat" action is still the most exciting.

WWWB VS 8 KNOT TROLLING??????TESTY ARE WE?

WHAT ! Trolling at 8 knots isn't a skill? Who intimated that ,I wonder?
WHAT! Trolling at 3 knots IS more a skill? Who IMPLIED that I wonder?
Lets not get testy and start IMPLYING that one set of skill's IS a skill better than others.
What YOU have chosen AS YOUR main means of being proficient in,IS NOT what OTHERS have CHOSEN AS THERE OWN.MMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Could it be that some of us who have tried your system AND FOUND IT NOT TO THERE LIKING (fish in the boat)and have gone back to there own way, are UNSKILLED fisherman? I don't think so.
Could it be that the WWWB system IS NOT the only way to catch fish IN ALL THE OCEANS of the world?
Off Pelrmo, I tied it. It wasn't for me.
Off Kona, I tried it and again it wasn't for me.
Off Barbados, I tried it . No difference from above.
Did I have skilled and proficient instructores? Yes.
Have my records shown an increase of WWWB over other ways? No.
Pros all over the world who fish hard every day have tried it. Some use it, most don't.MMMMMMMM. Does that mean that WWWB is a flop? I don't think so. Does it mean that EVERYONE should use it? I don't think so.
Does it take SKILL and ENTHUSIASM and Patience to learn ALL THE NUANCES of trolling plastics? I thnk so. Will I EVER LEARN all there is to know ABOUT TROLLING PLASTICS? No,I will never ,BUT I keep trying.
Will I disparage someone who fishes DIFFERENT FROM ME? LORD, I HOPE NOT!
Will I continue in my QUEST to learn as much as I can? Yes.
Will I put in as much time in a new system as my trusted ones? Gosh, I hope so.
Please don't make remarks as the ones above about not beeing skilled in trolling at 8 knots. THats just down right WRONG.
Do you know hwo to entice FISH BACK into your spread after they see and don't like what you built? Even at 8 knots , that happens.
Do you know hwo to swing your long lines out in front of a fast moving school of pelagics , WITHOUT breaking up that school?
DO you know how to use the rods to entice fish ,instaed of just rolling around looking for a bit?
Lot's more of the DO'S entailed trolling at 8 knots.
I also assume you know all the tricks in getting very "TOUCHY" fish to come CRASHING your lure/bait.
How about combining lure jigging to raise fish up from the deep that are tired of being run over at 3 knots to 8 knots?
How about combining the ART of the chunk WITH the ART of troll?
Lots more Do's and how To's in fishing. HECK, I'm just learning, My head is spinning with all this info. Maybe to many SKILLS to learn. O U C H !
HEY MARTY....help me out here. YOU and GAW are of the PROS the rest of us look to to learn about trolling MEAT.
GEE, Marty, I hope I haven't offended anyone out there.
I do KNOW that, what works well in one area,MIGHT NOT WORK well in othere areas.
I hope you guys from Aussie land or Cabo or Carribean will jump in and tell us a trick or two on the WWWB system or ANY system you fish REGULARLY.

    YEAH...YEAH...YEAH....BABY

    MARTY:

    YOU GOT IT BABE!

When that S L O B TUNA/MARLIN comes up and crashes your lure 20 feet behind the boat, YOU GET IT!
My knees shake, my temp goes to 105. My blood pressure skyrockets.
So many times, I've run boats for guys and gals . So many times, I've gone way, way up there into that tuna tower and prayed for those fish to come. Marlin , TUNA , ....BABY when you see that monster BIGEYE come up and out 6 feet in the air AIMING, BABY, AIMING for YOUR LURE at 8 knots, IT's a GAS.
YOU JUST FOOLED INTO TAKING SOMETHING THAT IS NOT NATURAL.
YOU JUST MADE IT DO SOMETHING IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE DONE! YOUWZA.
I LOVE IT. I LOVE IT. I LOVE IT. When All the guys down in the pit who see it, scream, shout, holler, wet their pants, jump up n down and just GRIN from EAR TO EAR over that scene. THat will last ALL THEIR LIVES. When they FINALLY get put into the HOT SEAT, they still scream n shout and grin and grin and grin and grin and grin.
How can that compete with a rig WWWB? I don't think so BABY. Will
WWWB work, Sure. Will it work for some? yes. Will it beat other ways of fishing? no.
I'm just telling you how it is for me and for the people who hire me to run their boats and learn .
