OH NO! BOX DOES IT AGAIN.

    HI:
When I put something way back behind the boat, I put it back where the prop wash turns from rolling white water to Champagne bubbles.
I'll put one of my TUNA TURBO BIRDS with a 3-5 T'ZER setup right behind the bird. 8-11 feet later I'll run one of my "GM" types OR better yet......A JET... Yes sir BOX, A jet. My JETS start out life as 2 ouncers then GRADUATE to 4 ouncers when the water get rough and the seas start building. Why? 'Cause I want that lure in line with the TUNA TURBO BIRD and the T'ZERS. That way the Tuna I'm after don't WACK the Bird BUT....BUT....BUT... see the JET and crash it hard. No reason to worry about mono stretch. I want 'em OVER THE RAIL and into my deck. No stretch = fish on the deck to me. Admittedly, I still think like a commercial, but what the HAY, I STILL CATCH FISH.
BOX, I like your idea on where to put that center rod. COOL! What I like a bit better, BOX, is put a BIRD,T'ZER, JET on one o/rigger tip and another BIRD,T'ZER, "GM" off the other o/rigger. I like it that way, 'cause the more splashing and trashing going on back there, I think, makes it look like a BROKEN up BAITBALL trying to get back together again.
    Any other ideas out there?

    Sorry BoX

I have to disagree here and here IS why I think the WWB is effective on Bluefins and this is the only time I pull a wwb for large bluefins and thats it.

1-Where I fish these tuna tend to be in shallow water between 30 fathoms to right off the beach. I fish alot of time between 20 and 16 fathoms.

2-These fish get a lot of pressure from fleets from several ports as a result I think that they get a little skittish. In the begining of the year I do get short bites from larger fish but as the season goes on this gets less and less frequent and my wwb bites get more frequent. I think these fish get skittish do to the number of boats and the water depth

3-These fish also get hammered by the chunking monkey which in my opinion really turns the bite off

4-I only troll a sea witch skirted bally back there as I own no birds

    Intersting opinion, that

    HI:
    Up in Nova Scotia.
    Up in Newfoundland.
Down off Bimini (when they were there).
    Off the West Coast.

SSSLLLOOOWWW trolling is the usual way to.
Most Comm. guys when they don't chunk slow troll . Most of the guys( I am included) use large plastic squids, Large Macks, and just about anything that will attract Tuna.
WWWB, I don't think so, at least when I was doing it. Up off Halifax, WE still slow troll in shallow water or off the banks .We haven't put out a WWB
yet. I'm sure some guys do( I think they do it on the sly). How successfull ? Good question.
Now the question that begs to be answered is :
Does it pay for small, small medium, medium, large BFT?
Depends on where and what you troll.
I believe that pressure from MOVING BFT is minimal. These tuna are on a
mission....i.e... to get where their going. Some succumb to our machinations, most don't. I think we pick off the less observant Tunas.
    Static Tunas......mmmmmmmmmmmm;
After they settle down, these same tunas, fall prey to EASY FOOD. by that I mean the BY CATCH the Draggers throw o/side. These same Tunas then get accustomed to the CHUNKING that the comm. guys and the SPORTS guys dish o/side every day. It's the sports guys who hold the tunas in an area wiht all that chunking. THats not wrong, it's just another way to cash in on the fish.
BLuefin are feeders in the group mode. YFT are bar room brawlers. Big difference in how they feed and the way to get 'em.
For Giant BFT, IF YOU KEEP THE SPEED DOWN and keep quiet (stop extranious quick loud noises) you can get them right behind the boat. I've done it time and time again. It will always work. NOT THE BEST FOR YFT. If in doubt, please reread 1st sentence in this apara.
WWWB ( for BFT)was a method that does work. Does it work ANYBETTER than the tried and true old methods? My records don't show it. THats why I still do it the old fashioned way.
For YFT, WWWB should work. Does work. But Why? Unless you are having a terrible day, not getting any hits, not getting any Tuna in your spread.....then I would think about the WWWB. Question on WWWB: How do you keep that rig cleaned of weeds? How do you see anthing following it if it's back so far? How do you work that WWWB rig if you see a bird workinng over a small pod of tuna? What do you do if you see a tuna bird working ove a LONE fish( usually a Marlin). Who gets the dirty job job of winding that MUTHA all the way in when you do get a fish on the other rigs?
As you can see, I'm not a fan of the WWWB, 'cause it's a last slap dash method for me.
For Bigeyes, all of mine came in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th wake wave on the troll or on the chunk.
Maybe for those who pull meat, it's a way to go. For the plastic trollers (me), no way.
I sure would like to hear from others, especially those guys in the Pacific. I haven't gotten to any of them on how and WHY they do it. To my main man in KWADGELIN, how do you do like to do it?
I used to hang out in the TUNA tower day after day and looked back at the spreads I was towing and other boats spread. My good GOLLY, you can see BFT come up and look around ( about 30 feet down) and roll over and go back down. Why? I think I answered that.
For YFT, they do mostly the same thing, ONLY they are prone to mass attacks . That meanse to me you can get them to go food berserk easyer. Not so , again, with BFT.
Sorry for going on and on. I'll slide back UNDER my dock and see what kind of food flashes by.

    PS:
I met a comm guy out of Shinnecock L.I. who uses the GREEN stick method. It works like a champ. WARNING...WARNING...WARNING... Do not use this method without experience and and downsizing the green stick. IT WILL PULL YOU OVER if your NOT CAREFULL.

i too try to avoid the wwwb lure set up...i run a bird that's chasing 3 mold craft squids-rigged on droppers.i set this just where the prop wash cleans up...i saw this rig in sport fishing mag a while ago,and i rigged up 3 of them,it works like the green stick the japanese boats use.never raised any bills on it but wacked a butt load of tuna off it...
found it! sport fishing mag december 2004 under rigging and techniques-the dangler rig...give it a shot

    Just a few pics

Heres a example. THis years ocmd tuna tournament five bluefins in two days four of the five caught way way back one short on a spreader bar the smallest of the two days. My log reflects this pattern as the rule not the exception over the past three years.

    BTW

That blue and white Islander with a select hoo has taken 75 percent of the bigger bluefin meaning a fish seventy pounds or over I fish it wwb half spool on a 80 130lb fluro wind on. In the past five years I just checked I have take three fish over seventy five pounds on short bites all three on spreader bars there weight 74 78 93 average wwb size fish was bigger. I will stack wwb fishing in the area of delmarva up against any other kind of trolling. In fact consider this a open invite a friendly competition anyone interested can come here and fish with me next year around late june early july you get a day of trolling your spread I get a day trolling mine. I just feel strongly about this fishing as it is day in day out what Is my best target species. Now I am sure if I was fishig for giants which I have done I would not me tempted to troll way way back

One final thing Before I go to bed

ITs not that hard to check the bait yea its not easy but not much in life is. I also would never troll way way back it jsut doesn't make sense to me. It goes against the stealthy sneak attack that is wwb trolling. It is also not a slapdash method its a skill that takes time and effort to get good at as far as I am concerned anyone can go out and chunk or drag plastics at 8 knots and hang a few fish but it doesn't feel like a skill I hope I have not stepped on anyones toes I am not being a jerk just telling you how I feel
