Guys it doesn't get any prettier than it was today for us small boat nuts. Left BI in the dark and headed south where the big hoo I caught Monday was iced down. My fishing partner John has been out of action for most of the summer with his dad passing and dealing with estate business. He was ready to kill something, anything? 35kt. run put us on the spot by 7am. I set the planer then the WWWWB, right short rigger which immediately gets crushed. I jump to the rod while John takes the wheel. I tell him to pull the other lines in, we have a problem. TLD25 loaded with 500yds. of braid and 100yds. of topshot is down to the last 100 or so and showing no signs of stopping.
I have never heard a reel cry for mercy like this. I lock the drag down trying to buy time for him to trip the planer and give chase. Well time ran out and the fish pulled offI can only guess it was a hoo of very large size and set hung on him. Oh well, set back out then the planer bounces and John jumps on it, good fish stays deep, lines cleared gaff ready. Little cranking and a big boy rolls up and feels the sting of steel, on the deck what a fish, his biggest to date officially 56.5 lbs. @ EJW's good for his citation. This has certainly been a good week for me, my pig Monday with Chip then my little boat's biggest to date.
Missed several more good bites before getting another Hoo around the mid 20's on the planer. The bite sorta slowed for us around lunch so we decided to hit some close grouper #'s. Short run put us on the first spot, marked a little clutter on the FF. John drops and brings up a nice pinky, I break out the new jigging setup and drop. 2 jigs and I feel a thud on the flutter down and bam solid hook up, short tussle and I have my first red grouper around 15lb. 2nd drop and another red closer to 20lb. I really had my doubts about jigging but it works. John snags a couple small beeliners then a good scamp. Worked a couple more lumps that only produced trash we decided to head for the hill @ a cool 30kt. cruise. I'll post some pics tomorrow. Plenty of Bonitas 5 miles off the Cape, acres of them, had the water literally boiling around the boat.
