    WAHOONBOX THANKS AND ????

Man your advise worked out great thanks.

what am I doing wrong? I can not get the planer to trip
when I drop it into freespool the spool trys to over run and when I push it back to strike the line gets tight but wont trip
I did not have time to put braid on the reel it is an penn 80 wide with 130 lbs line could this be the problem?

Bud you have to go with the braid. You need to set the drag loose enough to craw when you set the planer, but not dead loose so it balls up on you. Lay you index and middle finger on the inside of the reel but not in the way of the line while it creeps out. Make sure when you hook up the planer it is hooked up right the ring should be facing the reel when you go to set it. PM BOX & after he gets back from chasing whitetails I am sure he will help you out. Good Luck!

Oh and as far as triping it to bring it in or check the bait, dump it and lay your hand on the spool while it dives out so that it doesn't nest up on you. Count to 5, then throw the drag up to below the strike. This will float it like an anchor ball and then you can crank it in with one hand. Good Luck!

I am sorry but it sounds to me like capt. Terry is wanting you cut your fingers off. First off get the braid, the mono has to much strech to trip the planner well. When you get the braid, dump straight to freespool then kick it half way to strike.and it will trip. DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS ANY WHERE NEAR THAT SPOOL AND THE BRAID! When the reel as in free spool watch it and do not panic. When if starts to overrun just let it go, IT WILL right itself and start coming off the right way again. When it does, thats when you push the drag up. The two biggest things are don't panic when it overruns, and stay at trolling speed, if you start to slow down it will not trip.

    thanks guys for the replies
I will be getting the braid. I was thinking that the mono was stretching to much to trip the planer

    does it matter?
Also, I don't know what kind of rod your running it on but too limber a tip will also add to the difficulty in tripping it.
