How many of you know where I am coming from here? The season has started off on the wrong foot, as multiple trips have been canceled due to a variety of reasons. Out of the trips we have been able to make, we were in the right place, however, we arrived just a few hours after the bite, etc, etc.
Ok, that’s fishing, I accept that, and I am not whining here, just sharing a quick story that I know others will relate to and probably laugh at knowing that some one else is having a similar experience.
Here it is. Friday I go to the boat, fuel, bait, rigging, all that stuff to get ready to hunt some tuna. I am so ready to catch fish, let’s just say it’s a good thing I have a long shirt on. Then it happens, my dad calls and is stuck at work, customer problems in Australia (our evening time is their morning), so he is screwed. Not even a minute later my mate calls, his grandfather suffered a heart attack (the health of family is always more important than fishing, and the good news is his grandfather ended up being fine) and he is out. Well, that makes 2 out of 3 crewmembers out, so at this point I am cracking the cold ones and instead of a 2am departure time my plan has been modified now to a 2am bedtime.
My wife, another buddy, and two couples come down to enjoy a nice night at the dock. I am sick of looking at the dock by the way. We wake up Saturday to beautiful weather and I know this boat is not staying tied up all day. Fire the engines and off we go. We make it all the way to the 3 fathom line of the Cape May harbor and my gauges are going nuts. We just had a new generator installed the week before and as coincidence would have it my engine gauges are not right at all. For example, put one engine in gear and the engine temp goes from 180 to 250 in a second, on both engines. So there is a short or a bad ground somewhere, either way I don’t feel comfortable taking her out with no gauges. So back to the dock and I try to find the problem, but of course can’t. Plan B, Miller time.
This ended up being a longer story than planned, but here is the kicker. I am normally not superstitious, but I might be now. Late Saturday night I open the fridge to find something to splash into some vodka, as I am seriously nursing some fishing withdrawals. What do I see? A freaking BANANA! One of the girls that came down brought a freaking banana! Of course, she was the only one that had no idea that banana’s and fishing boats don't mix, so when I brought it outside, me and the banana were greeted with multiple people loudly asking one question. Can you guess the three words in the question? Right.
Anyway, a weekend on the boat, underway or not, is better than being anywhere else, and I say that knowing my wife does not frequent this site. Seriously, I am grateful to have the access and opportunity to run a boat that has provided some great experiences in the years past. Nonetheless, when I see some fat tuna flopping around a bloody cockpit it will have been a couple months of frustration well spent. It will happen soon, we are all due sooner or later.
