Hey Ace, I did forget to mention the shock leader in my post. After learning a few of your tricks it has improved things.

To all, ACE has some great knowledge as well as Ahi and others, good resources for wahoo and others.

Here is where I learned to rig my wahoo rigs. http://www.inthebite.com/tackle_tips...01/index.shtml works great.
here is another article about rigging wahoo lures. http://www.inthebite.com/tackle_tips...00/index.shtml

Your right king ain't no 'hoo alive going to get through that setup unless he wants to cleve his tail off.
Like I said on the other post, I will always be in the learning phase.
Uncoiling a leader...............hold the coil and be patient while backing it out CCW. Slow and steady wins the race!

SHUNT has had 200 lb mono tail whipped before out of the surf. But that is his story not mine.

Capt. Ron Schatman is a good friend of mine...Actually, he used to Capt. our boat a couple of yrs back...We used to work together and we adopted many of the Wahoo technique and tackle accessories you see used in the Bahamas and around the World...Ron and Emory Black (his mate) have caught more triple digit Hoo's than anyone I've ever met...Also, he has a couple of grander Blues to his resume too...

Cheers

Regardless of which leader system you prefer, if your using lures, put a small crimp about 1' in front of the lure. That prevents 2 things, the lure sliding along the fish and being cut off by another whoo going after the lure and since many of the real whoo lures have heavy heads it prevents the lure from acting as leverage to unhook if any slack is given unintentionally.

I HAVE NEVER SHOOK MY HEAD!

I HAVE PURPOSELY WATCHED , READ AND WAITED TO RESPOND ON THIS TOP KNOTCH REPORT

1ST..O-SEA-D......YOUR COMMENT IS AWESOME:"I like to keep the swivel away from the bait just because its an eye sore."

AND AHI.......AGAIN .....WORLD CLASS VERBAGE,TIP AND OBSERVATION I MUST SAY!

THIS PARTICULAR POST SAYS IT ALL IN MY BOOK.....AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT WIRE LEADERS HERE.....NOPE. I'M TALKING ABOUT A GANG OF WATER SAVVY ANGLERS PUTTING THERE THOUGHTS TOGETHER AND POSTING UP SOME GREAT WAYS AND TECHNIQUES TO TO PUT A WAHOONBOX....

NO ONE SLAMS ANYONE ON THEIR STYLE...NO ONE IS ALL RIGHT AND NO ONE IS ALL WRONG.....WE ALL HAVE SIMPLY STATE OUR CASE...OUR OWN WAY ...YOUR WAY.....AND IT'S UP TO THE WORLD OF FISHERMEN TO DECIDE WHAT'S BEST FOR THEM.......I FOR ONE LEARN A SHIT LOAD FROM YOU GUYS AND HOPE TO SEE MORE OF THREADS LIKE THIS!!! I TIP MY RIGGERS TO ALL HERE!

WHY THE 20 FOOT LEADERS?
REMEMBERING THAT I USE A TINY SPRO ON MY DEATH FROM ABOVE PLANER SYSTEM AND I USE ONLY A FOUR FOOT SHOT OF WIRE ON THIS AS WELL....THIS IS MY ONLY EXCEPTION TO A 20 FT LEADER.....BY USING A 4FT SHOT WITH A SMALL SPRO ON THE PLANER BAIT...I FEEL I KEEP YFT IN THE PICTURE TO SOME DEGREE........ WAHOO OR BILLFISH WILL SWAT THE LEADER BEHIND A SHORT PIECE OF WIRE AND VAMMO...GONE SEE YA LATER DUDE! AND THIS WILL HAPPEN TO ME AT TIMES ON THE PLANER!!

BUT FOR OUR SURFACE BAITS....18' MIN AND 20' MAX......

WHEN THE "RUN-OFF" IS HUNTING....IT'S A GIVEN FOR ME : IF A WAHOO EATS A BAIT ON PIANO WIRE, IT'S INDABOX!!!! I CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME WE BROKE A WIRE LEADER........AND BILLFISH ARE ALWAYS EXPECTED EVERY MINUTE AND EVERY DAY OFFSHORE.....AND A SHOT OF #9 WIRE TWENTY FEET LONG CAN HANDLE HIS BUTT.......
I WOULD HATE TO THINK HIS TAIL ACTION COULD REACH THE SNAP SWIVEL AREA AND ....B-I-N-G-O.....I'M OUTTA HERE

YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY I THINK MOST MATES/CREWS DO NOT USE A LONG LEADER SUCH AS CAPT BRIAN AND MYSELF? DO YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW? I HOPE YOU CAN HANDLE THE TRUTH HERE AND THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS: MOST CANNOT "HANDLE" THE 20 FT WIRE.....IN OTHER WORDS: MOST DO NOT KNOW HOW TO LEADER FISH AND ARE ...LET'S SAY... SCARED OF TAKING WRAPS MOST THINK OF THE LATE /GREAT CHRIS BOWIE OF OCEAN CITY WHEN THEY THINK OF TAKING WRAPS.....O IT'S GOOD TO RESPECT THE SITUATION!! ...BUT NEVER NEVER FEAR IT.......!!!!!!

WE,.... ON THE EAST COAST ARE IN A WORLD OF HIGH PRESSURE FISHING....AND HIGH PRESSURE FISHING TRANSLATES INTO STEATH TERMINAL TACKLE...LOW-PROFILE ....SMALL SWIVELS , CRIMPS, AND LEADERS........IF YOU GO OFF THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST AND FISH TWISTED CABLE AND 400 LEADER DAY IN AND DAY OUT FOR WHATEVER....YOU WILL, ...BE SADDED AND COME TO THE DOCK EMBARRASSED AND WITH YA TAIL BETWEEN YOUR LEGS

HEAVY CABLE AND LEADER SHOULD NOT BE USE IN HIGH PRESSURED FISHING ZONES ....UNLESS YOU ARE TARGETING BIG SHARKS...BLUE MARLIN ETC

ON THE OTHER HAND ....IF YOU WISH TO TARGET A WAHOO AT HIGH SPEED, 8 KTS AND HIGHER, THEN YOU MAY GET AWAY WITH TWISTED WIRE AND HEAVY CRAP........

ANOTHER POINT ON USING 20 FT.......
WHEN FISHING A RIGGER BAIT AND LETS SAY A WITCH OR ILANDER WITH MED BALLYHOO........THAT SWIVEL IS ACTUALLY UP IN THE AIR WITH A 20' WIRE LEADER AND NOT FROLICKING AROUND INVITED THE ALBIE /SKIPJACK NIBBLE THAT SO MANY TIMES KNOCKS YOUR LINE FREE FROM YOUR RELEASE CLIP ...MAKING YOU THINK YOU HAD A LEGITIMATE STRIKE! "THAR HE IS!!! you scream. WHEN ALL THE WHILE YOU HAD A SKIPJACK BUST ON YOUR WATER SKIPPING SWIVEL.

AND YOU WILL ALSO NOTE THAT A WIRE BAIT WITH 20' LENGTH WILL MAKE YOUR BAIT RUN DEEPER...EVEN IN A SHORT OR LONG RIGGER....THERE IS LESS WIND AND WATER DRAG ON A WIRE LEADER WHICH ALLOWS FOR A DEEPER RUN OF THE BAIT

AND FOR THE CREWS ABOVE THE DMZ......I SAY: NO NEED FOR WIRE LEADERS UNLESS YOU SPECIFICALLY WISHED TO TARGET THE WAHOOSKI IN YOUR WAHOO DEPRIVED AREA

I SHALL CALL THIS "EQUITORIAL LINE" I SPEAK OF HERE AS LET'S SAY THE INSHORE WATERS OF THE NORFOLK CANYON AND SOUTH

GREAT POST DRAGGIN'

REMEMBER......WHAT?...THAT'S RIGHT! "THIS IS ONLY MY WAY AND NOT THE ONLY WAY!"

Everyone has come up with good reasons to use what they use. And no one has started arguing about why there way is the best. I am glad I have found this site. I second Wahookings rigging if you are trolling wahoo at 10 knots or above. When in the bahamas our winter trolling was strictly wahoo and we rigged with 4' of 480lb dark cable to a double 12/0 0 degree hook placement to 15' of 400lb momoi diamond. This was attached to a 24-32 ounce trolling lead. But here in La. we use only 18" to 36" leaders of #9 single starnd or 135lb cable. I only use the cable, I have had way to many fish break off because of single strand. But maybe it was beacause I don't use it enough and know how to wrap it when leadering a fish. For everyday general trolling I work without a mate so short 6-8' 200-300lb. leaders are a must. I grab the leader with one hand and reach out with the gaff and stick them. I don't think the fish care if the swivel is in the water. It might actualy look like a small teaser and help out. But once again I am fishing in the most fish filled water I have ever fished. I am always up for trying new things to put more fish in the boat for my clients. So any suggestions on how to do things better I am all ears.

Hey Marty,

Maybe in you new interactive online rigging deal you can teach everyone from up north and down under how to uncoil 20' of wire.
